Ministry and Namib Foods team up for security

Agriculture minister Inge Zaamwani recently met with the Namib Foods Group to explore public-private partnerships aimed at boosting local food production, processing, and distribution across Namibia.

The meeting brought together the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Land Reform and the group, which consists of Namib Mills, Namib Poultry and FeedMaster.

The talks focused on local food production, processing, value addition, distribution and access to markets.

During the meeting, the group explained its operations and role in the production, processing and distribution of food products in Namibia.

The two sides also discussed areas in which the ministry and the private sector could work together to strengthen local agricultural production.

Zaamwani stressed the importance of partnerships between the government and private sector in improving food security, increasing local production and supporting agricultural development.

The discussions also looked at ways to strengthen links between farmers, processors and other players in the agricultural sector.

The ministry wants to increase local agricultural production and value addition while creating more opportunities for Namibian producers to supply the food industry.

The meeting follows a directive president Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah issued last year involving that the ministry should identify more land for agricultural production so that every region can contribute to food production.

In an effort to increase production, the ministry is developing a new green scheme at Ekoka village in the Ohangwena region, using borehole water for irrigation.

The ministry has allocated N$3.32 million to the Ekoka green scheme for the 2026/27 financial year.

Ministry spokesperson Romeo Muyunda says N$2 million of this allocation went towards a feasibility study, which has already been completed.

The remaining N$1.32 million will fund fencing, land preparation, weeding, ploughing and other activities needed to develop the scheme.
