Police in Meru County have placed two of their colleagues in custody following allegations that they defiled a three-and-a-half-year-old girl inside a police housing unit.
Detectives arrested Police Constable Nicholas Njagi and Police Constable James Mutabari, both attached to the Kinjo Police Patrol Base. Law enforcement officers detained the two suspects at Kariene Police Station on October 11, 2026.
Timeline of the Incident and Witnesses
The arrests followed a distressing report filed by the child’s mother, a resident of Kinjo Market, after she noticed her daughter in severe physical distress on the evening of October 9, 2026.
According to police investigation reports, the minor explained that a man she fondly called “Baba” carried her on his shoulders to his living quarters. Once inside, the suspect subjected her to an alleged incident involving something she described as sindano kubwa (“large needle”).
Two juvenile witnesses, aged seven and twelve, corroborated the toddler’s account. Sent by the mother to locate the missing child, the two young witnesses found her inside the residence occupied by Constable Njagi.
Medical Findings and Forensic Evidence
Medical professionals at the Nairobi Women’s Hospital in Meru confirmed physical trauma during an examination. The attending physician completed a P3 form, documenting physical trauma, swelling, lacerations consistent with defilement, and the presence of physical fluid.
Armed with the medical evaluation, detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in Imenti Central Sub-County initiated an immediate investigation. Crime scene officers processed the residence and recovered two bedsheets as key forensic evidence.
Positive Identification and Court Proceedings
Investigators achieved a major breakthrough during a formal identification parade conducted at Kariene Police Station. The young victim positively identified both Constable Njagi and Constable Mutabari, calling both officers “Baba” during the process.
Prosecutors plan to arraign the two officers before the Githongo Law Courts. The state intends to petition the court for custodial orders to detain the suspects while detectives complete their forensic investigations into the matter.
