Labour Party youth leaders seek possible alliance with Tinubu, APC for 2027
Youth leaders within the Labour Party have proposed opening discussions with the All Progressives Congress and groups aligned with President Bola Tinubu over a possible political collaboration ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The proposal followed a virtual meeting involving the party’s National Youth Leader, Prince Kennedy Ahanotu, five national zonal youth leaders and 32 state youth leaders.
A statement signed by the Edo State Labour Party Youth Leader, Ken Omusi, and published on the party’s official X handle on Saturday said the meeting was held on Friday to deliberate on the party’s political direction amid its prolonged internal crisis.
The participants also considered the future of youth involvement in the party and the wider political process ahead of the 2027 elections.
According to the statement, the youth leaders mandated Ahanotu to commence consultations with the APC, Renewed Hope Movement, City Boy Movement and Tinubu Support Group over the possibility of an alliance or other forms of political cooperation.
The statement said the decision followed concerns raised by participants about the treatment of young members during and after the 2023 elections.
It read, “During the meeting, several youth leaders expressed concerns about what they described as inadequate recognition, total negligence, lack of engagements and no support for the youth constituency during and after the 2023 general elections where they laboured in vain for a presidential candidate who lacked the skills to consolidate.

“They emphasised the need for a political platform and leader that would provide greater opportunities for youth participation, leadership development, economic empowerment, and inclusion in national decision-making.
“Following extensive deliberations, the youth leaders called on the National Youth Leader, Prince Kennedy Ahanotu, to commence with immediate effect consultations with relevant stakeholders within the APC, the Renewed Hope Movement, the City Boy Movement and the Tinubu Support Group to explore the prospects of a political alignment and possible collaboration ahead of the 2027 elections.”
The youth leaders said no final decision had been reached on the proposed alignment, adding that the outcome of consultations with the various stakeholders would inform their next steps.
They also proposed holding a physical meeting in Abuja to consider the outcome of the consultations and determine the group’s subsequent political direction.
During the virtual meeting, the participants reportedly discussed several areas of the Tinubu administration’s policies, including human capital development, youth empowerment, economic reforms, infrastructure, healthcare, education, security, agriculture and workers’ welfare.
The statement said the participants expressed differing views about the policies and their implications for the country’s development.
The proposed consultations come against the backdrop of continuing political manoeuvring ahead of the 2027 general elections, with politicians and political groups exploring possible alliances across party lines.
The Labour Party youth leaders stressed that their proposal remained at the consultation stage and that any further action would depend on broader discussions and consensus among the relevant stakeholders.
The development also comes amid continued divisions within the Labour Party.
In May 2026, Ahanotu emerged as the presidential candidate of the Julius Abure-led faction during its presidential, governorship and House of Representatives primaries. Another faction subsequently presented Chibuzo Okereke as its presidential candidate, underscoring the extent of the party’s internal disagreements.
The Labour Party emerged as a major opposition party during the 2023 presidential election, with its candidate, Peter Obi, securing 6,101,533 votes to finish third behind the candidates of the APC and the Peoples Democratic Party, according to results declared by the Independent National Electoral Commission.
The party also secured seats in the National Assembly and won the Abia State governorship election in 2023.
Against that background, the decision by a group of Labour Party youth leaders to explore consultations with the APC and organisations supporting Tinubu could become a significant development in the political realignments taking shape ahead of the 2027 elections.
