The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has warned motorists driving vehicles without registration plates and those fitting illegal sirens and blue lights, saying officers have been directed to impound vehicles and effect arrests.
In a statement on Tuesday, 1 September, ZRP spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi said police have noted with concern a disturbing trend of Zimbabweans driving plateless vehicles with total disregard for the law.
He said some individuals are also fitting and driving vehicles with blue lights, sirens, bar lights, beams and other unauthorised gadgets, posing a danger to the maintenance of law and order.
“It is regrettable for the Zimbabwe Republic Police to remind Zimbabweans that it is a serious offence for any motorist or individual to drive vehicles without number plates in the country or fit blue lights and other gadgets on vehicles which are not permitted,” said Commissioner Nyathi.
He said Commissioner-General of Police Stephen Mutamba has directed all police stations, districts and provinces to take stern action by arresting offenders and impounding all vehicles without registration plates and those fitted with illegal blue lights.
“No excuses from drivers or motorists will be entertained by police officers to enable the effective maintenance of law and order in the country to be enhanced,” he said.
Commissioner Nyathi said the operation is aimed at restoring order on the roads and curbing the misuse of gadgets reserved for emergency and security services.
