A 43-year-old woman and her 20-year-old son were gunned down in an early-morning shooting at Madison Court in Scottsdene, Kraaifontein.
Police spokesperson Constable Ndakhe Gwala said Kraaifontein police registered two counts of murder following the incident, which occurred at about 5:30am on Thursday, August 27.
Gwala said the mother noticed after waking up that her son was not at home.
"She told her daughter she was going out to look for him, but shortly after that her daughter heard gunshots. The 43-year-old woman and her 20-year-old son were found outside lying next to each other with gunshot wounds on their upper bodies," she said.
Medical personnel declared both victims deceased at the scene. The motive for the shooting has not yet been established, and no arrests have been made.
The Kraaifontein Community Development Forum expressed shock over the deaths, describing the incident as a tragedy for the Scottsdene community.
In a statement, the forum called on police to identify and arrest those responsible.
"How cruel can this life be? Mother and son were gunned down in the early morning hours in Scottsdene Madison Court. We don't care what reason the shooters had; you don't kill your own in cold blood," it stated.
The circumstances surrounding the shooting are under investigation.
