Suspected bandits have abducted the Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rogo Local Government Area of Kano State, Abdullahi Alhassan Beli.
The gunmen reportedly invaded Beli community at about 10:30 pm on Monday night firing sporadically before heading to the residence of the APC chairman and taking him away.
Yakubu Bala, a councillor representing Beli, confirmed the attack to journalists, saying residents and security operatives attempted to repel the attackers but were unable to apprehend them.
“They came in firing sporadically and went directly to the APC chairman’s house and abducted him,” Bala said.
According to him, security operatives later pursued the attackers to Dandan, a neighbouring community, where they reportedly abandoned three motorcycles and fled.
“We tried our best alongside the security agents to apprehend them but we couldn’t. However, security operatives were able to catch up with them around Dandan, a neighbouring village not too far from us, and they were able to apprehend three bikes they left behind and ran off,” he said.
Bala also disclosed that a resident was shot during the attack but survived. “The boy they shot is an almajiri, but we thank God he is still alive,” he said.
LEADERSHIP reports the attack is the latest in a series of reported incidents across communities in parts of Kano State within the past three days.
On Sunday, suspected bandits attacked Chiromawa in Garin Malam Local Government Area, killing three people and abducting an elderly man. The man was later reported to have escaped from his captors.
On Monday, gunmen reportedly attacked Rantan community in Bebeji Local Government Area, killing two residents and abducting a woman.
The latest attack in Beli has raised fresh concerns about the worsening security situation in parts of Kano State.
As of the time of filing this report, the Kano State Police Command had yet to issue an official statement on the latest attack.
