Police seize electronic devices from Senzo Mchunu’s KZN home

KwaZulu-Natal police have confirmed that officers from the Provincial Serious and Violent Crimes Unit executed a search-and-seizure warrant at the KwaZulu-Natal residence of suspended Police Minister Senzo Mchunu.

The warrant was granted by the Johannesburg High Court, and electronic devices were seized during the operation on Monday, 21 September 2026.

POLICE SEIZE SENZO MCHUNU’S DEVICES

KZN police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda said the search and seizure was part of a normal investigative process in which police apply to a court for a warrant to search for and seize specific items.

“This is part of an ongoing police investigation on cases of defeating the ends of justice and fraud among other charges which were opened in 2025 at Durban Central police station,” said Netshiunda.

Mchunu confirmed that police had searched his home and seized his phone. He said he handed over the device in accordance with the court order.

The latest search follows an earlier seizure of electronic devices from Mchunu’s home.

The investigation relates to cases of alleged defeating the ends of justice and fraud that were opened at Durban Central Police Station in 2025.

Mchunu was placed on special leave after KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi accused him of obstructing criminal investigations to shield individuals linked to organised crime and senior police officials.

In a July media briefing, Mkhwanazi claimed that Mchunu ordered the disbandment of the Political Task Team, which investigated political killings and organised crime in KwaZulu-Natal.

NOT THE FIRST TIME DEVICES HAVE BEEN HANDED OVER TO POLICE

In November 2025, Senzo Mchunu, who is currently on special leave, handed over his electronic devices to investigators as part of an ongoing probe into alleged corruption and interference in South Africa’s justice system.

Mchunu’s newly appointed spokesperson at the time, Sthembiso Mshengu, confirmed that the former minister had surrendered his devices to the police.

Mshengu was appointed to deal specifically with queries relating to the Madlanga Commission.
