Be Prepared to Pay a Rs. 20 Million Fine for Dumping Waste That Harms the Environment! Environmental Laws Have Been Strengthened.
Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya says the National Environmental Amendment Bill has been passed in Parliament, strengthening the law to impose fines of up to Rs. 20 million and prison sentences on individuals who dispose of waste harmful to the environment.
She made these remarks yesterday (10) while attending the 36th anniversary celebration of the National Namal Uyana and an event to distribute school supplies, including exercise books, to more than 1,500 schoolchildren.
The event, organised with assistance from South Korea, commenced with the Prime Minister planting a sapling. School supplies were subsequently distributed, and local and foreign individuals, including journalists who had contributed to the protection of National Namal Uyana, were honoured in recognition of their efforts.
Highlighting the contributions made by Venerable Wanawasi Rahula Thero and others towards protecting National Namal Uyana, which is renowned for its rose quartz mountain range and forest ecosystem, the Prime Minister emphasised that a country’s most important investment is not the construction of buildings, but the education and character development of its children.
