NEW: Office of the President and Cabinet mourns Zimbabwe Human Rights Commissioner Engineer Martin Muduva

THE Office of the President and Cabinet (OPC) has described the Zimbabwe Human Rights Commission (ZHRC) Commissioner Dr Engineer Martin Muduva, who died on September 9, 2026, as a distinguished son, patriot, engineer and academic who dedicated his life to serve the nation.

In an official condolence statement issued yesterday, Acting Chief Secretary to the President and Cabinet, Reverend Paul Damasane, conveyed heartfelt condolences on behalf of President Mnangagwa, Acting President Dr Constantino Chiwenga, Vice President Kembo Mohadi and the Government.

“Zimbabwe has lost a distinguished son, a patriot, an engineer and an academic who dedicated his life to service of the nation. Dr Muduva served as Commissioner of the Zimbabwe Human Rights Commission from 19 December 2024, where he uniquely bridged technology and human rights, championing digital rights, data protection, online safety and ethical governance of Artificial Intelligence,” said Rev Damasane.

“An accomplished academic, he was a lecturer at Midlands State University and holder of a DPhil in Data Science, MSc in Big Data Analytics (1st Class), MSc in Mechatronics and AI, and BTech (Hons) in Information Security and Assurance (1st Class) from HIT. He mentored many young professionals in cybersecurity and digital forensics … The nation will forever remember his conviction that technology must serve people.”

Dr Muduva, who had served as a ZHRC Commissioner since December 19, 2024, was widely recognised for bridging the gap between technology and human rights.

During his tenure, he championed key issues surrounding digital rights, data protection, online safety and the ethical governance of Artificial Intelligence (AI).

Throughout his academic career, he actively mentored young professionals in cybersecurity and digital forensics.

His work earned him both national and international acclaim, including the Global Business Achievers Network Platinum Award for Visionary Leadership and Sustainability Excellence, which he received in August 2026.
