Nigerian music lawyer and founder of Amelia Songs, Akinyemi Ayinoluwa, has identified some factors that contribute to the impressive performance of the Nigerian music industry.
Speaking in an interview on Cruise Control with Merqury Quaye and Maame Adwoa Akotaah on Hitz 103.9 FM, Ayinoluwa said Nigeria’s large population provides its creative talents with a sizeable domestic market and a strong numerical advantage.
“One of the things we have going on for the Nigerian talents is the power of numbers and the population. It kind of gives them an advantage,” he said.
Ayinoluwa further described Nigerians as “flamboyant,” “loud mouthed” and “braggadocious”, arguing that these characteristics can sometimes translate into confidence and aggression in the pursuit of success within the entertainment industry.
According to Ayinoluwa, Nigerians are also naturally competitive, and the willingness to compete and constantly seek to outdo one another has become a driving force for some Nigerian creatives.
“So I think the edge would be like the attitude and the aggression to outdo,” he explained. “You know, with Nigerians, immediately you do a two-million-dollar deal, the other Nigerian wants to do a three-million-dollar deal. Nigerians are very competitive,” he indicated.
Beyond the domestic market, Ayinoluwa believes the size of the Nigerian diaspora also contributes to the international reach of Nigerian music.
“And also I think the diasporan population all over the world also helps,” he added.

Ayinoluwa is an entertainment lawyer and founder and managing partner of Hightower Solicitors and Advocates, where he specialises in music law and represents recording artists, songwriters, record producers, record labels, music investors and talent managers.
He has spent more than a decade advocating for the rights of songwriters and record producers, whom he has previously described as some of the most underrepresented players in the music industry.
In 2025, Ayinoluwa was named among Billboard’s Top Music Lawyers, becoming the only Nigerian lawyer featured on the list that year. Billboard highlighted his work representing major Afrobeats producers and his involvement in music publishing and rights negotiations.
His firm has represented producers including Magicsticks, Ragee, Rexxie, Blaq Jerzee, Masterkraft and Marvey Musique, among others.
Ayinoluwa also has experience as a musician, having previously worked as a songwriter, recording artist and performer before establishing himself in entertainment law.
His comments come amid continued conversations about the differing trajectories of the Ghanaian and Nigerian music industries, particularly Nigeria’s growing global footprint in Afrobeats and the need for Ghanaian talents to expand their reach beyond the local market.
