Tinus du Plessis, Namibia’s three-time World Cup warrior

Retired flanker Tinus du Plessis spent most of his career in the trenches of professional rugby in South Africa and England, and holds the rare distinction of representing Namibia at three Rugby World Cups.

Born and raised in Windhoek, Du Plessis first cut his teeth at Windhoek High School (WHS) where he matriculated in 2002, before taking his talent to the world stage.

“I loved playing on the flank because it suited how I wanted to play the game – working hard, being physical, and getting involved wherever I was needed,” he says.

He says he gave everything for the team and never held back.

“I wasn’t interested in taking shortcuts. I wanted to work hard and represent Namibia with pride.”

He started his club rugby journey with Wanderers in Windhoek long before he spent his professional career in England.

He first joined Cornish All Blacks before he moved to Rotherham Titans and later London Scottish and London Wasps.

Despite all the glamour and glitz, Du Plessis says representing Namibia at three Rugby World Cups and earning 54 caps are achievements that mean the most to him.

“If I could draw a line between the standard of rugby in England and South Africa, where I graduated from Stellenbosch University – both are demanding environments,” he says.

“South African rugby is competitive, while English rugby is structured, tactical, and played at a high pace. Both countries are unique in different ways.”

Du Plessis says playing in England taught him a great deal about preparation, discipline, and consistency.

The former WHS pupil played for Namibia from 2005 to 2016, including at the Rugby World Cups in 2007, 2011, and 2015.

“I earned 54 caps for Namibia and had the opportunity to play professional rugby in England,” he says, adding that representing his country on the World Cup stage remains the highlight of his career.

Du Plessis had a simple approach to playing – to go as hard as he could for as long as he could.

Apart from gaining more fame as a rugby player, he also played some club cricket growing up.

Du Plessis was first selected to the Namibian squad for the 2007 World Cup in France, where he made three appearances.

“After my World Cup debut, I was also in the national teams that participated in the Africa Cup in 2008 and 2009, before I went to New Zealand for the 2011 World Cup,” he says.

“I was a very proud member of the Namibian team that won the 2010 IRB Nations Cup in Romania, which previously made Namibia proud by winning the 2009 African Cup.”

The 2010 IRB Nations Cup success turned out to be Namibia’s first-ever title in a senior International Rugby Board competition.

Du Plessis received the man of the match award in a 2011 World Cup match against Wales despite Namibia being comprehensively defeated 81-7 by Wales.

WORK, FAMILY

The retired star is married to Juanita, and the couple has two young children.

“Family life keeps you grounded,” he says.

Du Plessis is a pension fund consultant, “advising businesses on their pension fund matters”.

He says Johan Venter had a major influence on his rugby career.

“He brought me into the Namibian setup in 2006 and took a chance on me. I’ll always be grateful for that opportunity.”

He says his career, although very exciting, wasn’t short of tough moments on the field.

“My toughest moments were thanks to Jerome Kaino. He was exceptionally physical and skilful.”

Kaino was a New Zealand rugby player.

Du Plessis believes his work rate and commitment made him stand out from the other players.

“I was prepared to put my body on the line, work for the team and keep going when the game became tough,” the former Wanderers player says, adding he is not formally involved with the game because his focus is on his young family and work at the moment.

Despite the hectic schedule that comes with looking after your family and work, Du Plessis says he is still in touch with some of his teammates.

“The friendships you build through rugby do not disappear when your playing career ends.”

What is the biggest thing he misses from his days as a rugby player?

“The camaraderie and the tours. You spend so much time together as a team through training, matches, travel, and difficult moments. Those shared experiences are what I miss most,” he says.

Du Plessis has some advice for young and aspiring rugby players.

“Work hard, stay disciplined, and value every opportunity. Rugby careers are shorter than you think,” he says.

“Respect the game, listen to the people who believe in you, look after your body, enjoy the journey, and be prepared for when your career ends.”
