Trump Rejects Blame for Republican Midterm Losses, Faults Candidates After Democrats’ Congress Sweep

Trump has rejected blame for Republican Midterm losses and faulted candidates after Democrats’ Congress sweep.

**NewsOnline Nigeria **reports that United States President Donald Trump has rejected suggestions that his leadership and policies were responsible for the Republican Party’s defeat in the 2026 midterm elections, instead blaming the party’s candidates for failing to mobilise voters.

The election results, which handed Democrats control of both the House of Representatives and the Senate, have raised questions about Trump’s political influence and the direction of his administration during the final two years of his presidency.

However, Trump dismissed the suggestion that the outcome represented a personal setback, insisting that his administration had recorded significant achievements.

“But I don’t view it as a hit on me,” Trump told Fox News during a live phone interview.

“We’ve had the greatest two years in the history of the presidency in terms of the economy, in terms of all the things that we’ve done.”

The President argued that Republican candidates failed to inspire enough voters to turn out, despite his efforts to support them through campaign appearances and endorsements.

“They just didn’t inspire the people to get out and vote,” he said.

“And I wasn’t on the ballot. If I was on the ballot, they would have got out.”

Trump also expressed surprise at the scale of the Republican losses, saying he had expected the party’s candidates to perform better.

“I thought they’d do better,” he said, attributing the outcome partly to what he described as a prevailing political mood.

The President had spent weeks campaigning in Republican-leaning states, urging voters to support the party’s candidates and telling them to “pretend I’m on the ballot”.

However, several candidates who received his endorsement suffered defeats, including Darline Graham in South Carolina, Ken Paxton in Texas, Michael Whatley in North Carolina and Mike Collins in Georgia.

Some of Trump’s endorsements had reportedly been made against the wishes of other Republican leaders.

The President defended his decision to support Paxton over incumbent Senator John Cornyn in Texas, saying he had little choice.

“I had no choice,” he said.

“When it wasn’t fashionable, he kissed my ass.”

In a post on his Truth Social platform shortly before midnight, Trump indicated that he would publicly analyse the reasons behind the Republican losses.

“I’m going to become a Political Pundit, both good and bad, on the reasons these Candidates won and lost!” he wrote.

He subsequently criticised Texas Governor Greg Abbott, describing him as a “Republican in name only” and accusing him of returning to an unsuccessful political strategy.

“He went back to his original formula, and it wasn’t pretty!” Trump wrote.

However, in an interview with Politico, the President said he was not interested in blaming anyone for the election outcome.

“I don’t want to blame anybody,” he said.

“I just want to say, you know, it was a very interesting period of time. I watched with great interest, learned from it.”

Trump Acknowledges Iran War Played a Role

Although Trump initially rejected suggestions that his policies were responsible for the Republican defeat, he later acknowledged that the US-Israeli war against Iran contributed to the party’s poor performance.

“I think a part of it was Iran,” he told Fox News, while separately describing the conflict as “a piece of it” in an interview with The Wall Street Journal.

The war and its economic consequences, including rising fuel prices, had featured prominently in the campaigns of Democratic candidates.

Despite acknowledging its possible impact on the election, Trump defended his decision to launch the military action and dismissed suggestions that he regretted it.

“I don’t think about it. I did the right thing,” he told The Wall Street Journal.

“I would have done it again.”

Reuters reported that Trump maintained his position on the military action despite the Republican losses, while acknowledging that the conflict had influenced voters’ decisions.

Trump Signals Willingness to Work With Democrats

Following the Democratic victories, Trump also expressed willingness to cooperate with the opposition party, which will now have greater influence over legislative decisions in Washington.

He said he had already spoken with some Democratic politicians, although he did not identify them.

“You know, I have a lot of friends that are Democrats. Believe it or not, I’ve already spoken to some of them,” he said.

The President indicated that he was open to finding areas of agreement with Democrats, although he also emphasised his constitutional veto powers as a means of blocking legislation he opposes.

The Democratic takeover of both chambers marks a significant shift in congressional control and is expected to complicate Trump’s legislative agenda during the remainder of his term.

The results represent a major setback for Republicans, who had controlled both chambers of Congress before the election, and have intensified scrutiny of Trump’s influence over the party and his administration’s policy direction.
