Meghan Markle’s Malala Fund Pledge Under Scrutiny as As Ever Sales Raise Questions Over £1,900 Donation Estimate

Meghan Markle has drawn attention to the potential financial impact of her latest charitable initiative after pledging proceeds from sales of her As Ever jams and teas to the Malala Fund, the organisation founded by Nobel Peace Prize laureate Malala Yousafzai.

The Duchess of Sussex announced the partnership on Instagram ahead of the International Day of the Girl on October 11. She said that, in collaboration with Archewell Philanthropies, 100 per cent of the net proceeds from sales of selected As Ever products would support the charity’s work to secure safe, quality education for girls worldwide.

The announcement followed a meeting between Meghan and Malala at Claridge’s in London the previous Wednesday. The social media post featured an image of the pair together and a joint statement emphasising the importance of educating girls to empower future generations.

Meghan encouraged her 4.9 million Instagram followers to purchase the products, describing the initiative as a way to support the charity’s mission.

However, the announcement has prompted questions about how much money the campaign might ultimately generate, particularly because the company has not publicly disclosed its sales figures for the promotional period.

Questions Over the Financial Impact of the Donation

The central issue surrounding Meghan’s pledge is the distinction between donating all net proceeds and donating all revenue generated by sales.

Net proceeds represent the amount remaining after relevant costs and expenses are deducted. Consequently, the total contribution to the Malala Fund would depend on how many products customers purchased and the profit margins associated with those sales.

According to estimates presented in the original report, a calculation based on a previous day’s sales could put the potential contribution at approximately £1,900 if unusually generous profit assumptions were applied.

That figure is not a confirmed donation or an official estimate from As Ever. Meghan’s company has not released the sales data needed to establish the actual amount raised through the International Day of the Girl campaign.

A source close to the Duchess reportedly acknowledged that any estimate would be speculative, while stressing that the charitable initiative could encourage other people to contribute to the Malala Fund.

The source’s argument was that the publicity surrounding the partnership might generate additional support beyond the money raised directly through product sales.

Previous Sales Data Offers a Glimpse Into As Ever’s Performance

Some of the questions about As Ever’s commercial performance stem from a website glitch in January that temporarily allowed customers to order quantities reflecting the stock available for certain products.

The original report says the glitch remained unresolved for approximately 24 hours, making it possible to estimate how many items were sold between January 4 and January 5.

The figures cited in the report indicated that the Signature Fruit Spread Gift Box, priced at $42 for three jars, was the brand’s strongest seller during that period, with 25 units sold.

Herbal lemon and ginger tea and herbal hibiscus tea reportedly sold 10 units each at $14 per pack, excluding shipping. The orange marmalade sold two jars, while the sage honey sold five.

The report also cited estimated sales of $4,677 for jams and spreads and $364 for tea, based partly on assumptions about products for which complete figures were unavailable.

These figures relate to a specific period immediately after Christmas and should not be treated as a complete picture of the business’s performance throughout the year. The company has not publicly confirmed the estimates.

Profit Margins Complicate Estimates of the Charity Contribution

The report attempted to estimate the possible donation by applying different profit margins to the reported sales figures.

Commercial jam can operate on relatively narrow margins, while artisan products and premium teas may generate higher returns. The calculation assumed a particularly generous 50 per cent margin for both categories.

Under those assumptions, the estimated proceeds from the relevant sales would amount to approximately $2,520, equivalent to around £1,902 using the conversion in the report.

That calculation remains an illustration rather than a verified financial result. Actual net proceeds would depend on production costs, packaging, shipping arrangements, operating expenses and the precise terms of the charitable pledge.

It is also important to distinguish the estimated value of products sold from the amount that a business ultimately earns after expenses. Without audited figures or a company statement, the final contribution cannot be established reliably.

Candles and Other As Ever Products Reportedly Recorded Lower Sales

The January figures cited in the report also suggested that several other As Ever products sold in relatively small quantities during the same 24-hour period.

Seven units of the No. 084 candle, priced at $64 each, were reportedly sold. The company also recorded seven bottles of its 2024 Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc and seven bottles of Napa Valley rosé, each priced at $35, alongside nine tins of flower sprinkles costing $15 apiece.

The report said no bottles of Napa Valley Brut, priced at $89, were sold during that particular period. It also cited no sales of certain other products, including a spiced cider kit and another candle.

These figures offer only a narrow snapshot of activity during the post-Christmas period, when demand for some luxury products may be lower. They do not establish whether the brand has experienced sustained growth or decline.

Wine could potentially provide a stronger revenue stream because direct-to-consumer sales may allow higher margins than some other products, although As Ever’s actual margins have not been publicly verified.

Meghan Expands As Ever’s Product Range Despite Questions About Demand

Despite the scrutiny surrounding the brand’s sales, Meghan has continued to expand its product offering.

The original report notes that As Ever recently introduced three hampers priced between $211 and $259, as well as an advent calendar costing $148.

The company has also indicated plans to begin shipping selected products to the United Kingdom. According to the report, the proposed UK range would exclude food products because of logistical and regulatory complications, with tea, candles and bookmarks among the items expected to be available.

The expansion could give the business access to a wider customer base, particularly among British consumers interested in the Duchess’s lifestyle brand.

However, its commercial success will depend on demand, pricing, distribution and the company’s ability to convert public interest into repeat purchases.

Scrutiny Continues Over the Sussexes’ Commercial Future

The questions surrounding As Ever have also revived wider discussion about how Meghan and Prince Harry intend to sustain their commercial ventures.

The original report cited unnamed California sources who characterised the brand as a small business facing difficulties, while suggesting the couple’s return to the UK was connected to financial pressures following their earlier media deals.

Those claims have been disputed by representatives associated with the Sussexes and have not been established as fact.

Meghan could pursue further entertainment work, with former Hollywood agent Ari Emanuel reportedly saying she was being booked for television and reality-related projects. Harry, meanwhile, has opportunities to earn money through speaking engagements and other paid appearances.

The couple could also benefit financially if investments in outside businesses or new commercial ventures prove successful.

For now, however, the available information does not provide a complete picture of their finances or establish the overall performance of As Ever.

The Difference Between Publicity and Measurable Charitable Impact

Meghan’s partnership with Malala places the Duchess’s commercial brand alongside an internationally recognised education campaign. The Malala Fund works to advance girls’ access to education, making the partnership relevant to a major global cause.

Yet the amount raised through the initiative remains unknown because As Ever has not published the relevant sales figures or confirmed the final donation.

The campaign’s wider impact may extend beyond direct product sales if the announcement encourages additional contributions or draws attention to the barriers girls face in accessing education.

Ultimately, the success of the pledge will be measured not by the prominence of the announcement alone, but by the money delivered to the charity and the support generated for its work. Until the figures are disclosed, any precise estimate of the donation should be treated with caution.
