Breast Cancer Awareness Month: Sankore Polyclinic offers free screening to residents

Sankore Polyclinic in the Ahafo Region has organised a breast cancer awareness campaign and free screening exercise for residents as part of activities marking Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

The initiative seeks to educate the public on the importance of early detection, encourage regular screening and promote preventive measures against the disease.

Speaking to Adom News, a Midwifery Officer at the facility, Barbara Amankwaah, highlighted the need for residents to adopt healthy lifestyles to reduce their risk of developing breast cancer.

She identified excessive alcohol consumption and smoking as some of the risk factors associated with the disease, while noting that certain hormonal contraceptives may also influence breast cancer risk.

Madam Amankwaah encouraged residents, particularly women, to take breast health seriously and seek medical attention whenever they notice unusual changes in their breasts.

She disclosed that the facility had recorded relatively few breast cancer cases in Sankore and surrounding communities, attributing the situation partly to continuous public education and awareness campaigns undertaken by health professionals.

According to her, the polyclinic regularly sensitises residents to the importance of early detection and timely medical intervention.

She further explained that individuals suspected of having breast cancer are referred to the Goaso Municipal Hospital for further examination and appropriate treatment.

Madam Amankwaah reiterated the facility’s commitment to sustained public education and screening exercises to help residents detect breast cancer early and improve treatment outcomes.
