If your living room has looked the same for years, you probably know exactly what needs changing. The problem is that a complete makeover can be expensive.
But you do not need a new sofa, expensive artwork or a house full of new accessories to make the room feel different.
These simple living room ideas on a budget can give your space a fresh look without spending a fortune.
Start with the easiest and cheapest change: move things around.
Try putting the sofa on a different wall, moving an armchair or changing the position of the coffee table.
You might be surprised by how different the room feels.
Before buying anything, look around the rest of the house.
A lamp from the bedroom, a vase from the dining room or a basket from another room could give your living room a completely different look.
You already own more decorating options than you think.
A light from your bedroom can work just as well in your living room.

Sometimes the room does not need more decor. It needs less.
Clear your coffee table, shelves and side tables. Pack away ornaments you have stopped noticing and leave some surfaces relatively bare.
The room will immediately feel calmer.
New cushion covers are a relatively inexpensive way to introduce colour and texture.
You do not need a dozen new cushions. Two or three covers in a different colour or pattern can be enough to change the look of a sofa.
Better still, check whether you already have cushions elsewhere in the house that you can swap around.

Take a fresh look at your walls.
Move existing pictures to different positions or create a small gallery wall using family photographs, prints or artwork you already have.
If your walls are looking particularly tired and you own the property, a fresh coat of paint can also make a noticeable difference.
Do not rely only on the main ceiling light.
A table lamp beside the sofa or a floor lamp in a dark corner can make the room feel warmer and more inviting.
Look for affordable lamps at second-hand shops, charity shops and local marketplaces rather than automatically buying new.
A bit of greenery can breathe life into a tired room.
Move an existing plant into the living room or add a simple vase of fresh flowers or greenery.
You do not need to turn the room into a jungle. One well-placed plant can be enough.

Before buying new curtains, cushions or rugs, clean the ones you own.
Wash your curtains if they are washable, clean your cushions and give your rug a proper clean.
You may find that some of the things making the room look tired simply needed a little attention.
Before replacing an old piece, ask whether it can be improved.
New handles can update a cabinet. Paint can give an old wooden side table a completely different appearance.
A small stool, cabinet or side table can also be moved from another room and given a new purpose.

If you do want to buy something, resist the temptation to buy everything at once.
Choose the change that will make the biggest difference.
It could be a new rug, a statement lamp, cushion covers or a piece of artwork.
A carefully chosen addition will have far more impact than a pile of inexpensive items that leave the room looking cluttered.
Refreshing your living room does not have to mean starting again.
Move things around. Remove what you no longer need. Bring forgotten pieces back into the room and make one or two affordable changes.
You may find that your living room did not need a makeover after all. It just needed a fresh perspective.
