Husband forces wife into sex as ‘proof’

A case involving a Malawian woman living in South Africa has raised concern after her husband allegedly forced her to have sex with her boyfriend in front of a group of people while the incident was being filmed.

According to a Malawian resident who said they knew the people involved, the incident allegedly happened on Tuesday at the husband’s home in Olievenhoutbosch.

Videos circulating on social media appear to show the woman and the man inside a room surrounded by several people.

One person appears to be carrying a knife while others give instructions to the two.

The footage also appears to show the man being slapped and spat on as the group orders the pair to engage in the sexual act.

People in the room can be heard discussing the use of a torch and mobile phones to record the incident.

At one point, a man speaking in Chitumbuka appears to say that they now have “proof”, before the two are told to put on their clothes.

Statements heard in the footage also suggest that the recording was intended to serve as evidence of the alleged relationship and to be shared with relatives.

A Malawian resident living in the same area told this publication that the woman and the man are both Malawians from Mzimba District.

According to the resident, the woman’s husband provided transport for her to travel to South Africa.

The source alleged that the woman later suffered repeated abuse during her marriage, including beatings, restrictions on her movements and clothing, and threats with a knife.

The resident said the woman repeatedly fled to her father-in-law’s home following alleged abuse but returned to her husband after he apologised.

The woman’s father is also based in South Africa, although the source said he lives far from his daughter.

According to the resident, the father eventually became frustrated with the situation and told the husband to leave his daughter alone.

The woman later left her husband and began living with another man, the source said.

The husband allegedly searched for her after she left and shared her picture in social media groups, asking people to report if they saw her.

The resident alleged that the husband subsequently hired men who went to the home where the woman and the man were staying and took them away at night.

According to the source, the following morning, the man was allegedly asked to provide three cattle and four goats.

The source also claimed that the woman had been beaten before the alleged sexual incident, saying they personally saw that her lip was swollen.

The resident said the two were later taken to the husband’s home, where the alleged forced sexual act took place.

According to the source, the husband regarded the recording as proof that his wife had been involved with another man.

The footage also appears to contain statements indicating that it was intended to be sent to relatives.

It was also not immediately clear whether the South African Police Service has opened a case or whether anyone has been arrested.

The identities of the woman and the other man have been withheld because of the nature of the allegations and to avoid further exposing people who appear to have been subjected to non-consensual sexual activity.
