Top 10 Mobile Phone Brands In Africa In 2026. iPhone And Samsung Are Not Number One!

10. realme

• Parent Company:

  BBK Electronics

• Key Focus Areas:

Budget and mid-range smartphones, aggressive online sales

• Estimated African Market Share:

  ~2% to 3%

realme entered African markets later than its BBK stablemates Oppo and Vivo, and it has spent the past two years clawing back the gap. The brand built its base on flash sales and e-commerce partnerships, undercutting rivals on price in Egypt and Nigeria. It is still a small player continent-wide, but its shipment growth outpaces almost every brand on this list.

9. Huawei

• Parent Company:

  Huawei Technologies

• Key Focus Areas:

Mid-range and premium Android devices, telecom infrastructure crossover

• Estimated African Market Share:

  ~4% to 6%

Huawei's global smartphone business never recovered from US sanctions, but the brand kept a foothold in North Africa, where its name still carries weight from years of telecom infrastructure contracts. Algeria and Morocco remain its strongest markets. Without access to Google Mobile Services, Huawei leans on its own AppGallery ecosystem to hold onto buyers who already trust the badge.

8. Honor

• Parent Company:

Honor Device Co. (spun off from Huawei)

• Key Focus Areas:

  Mid-range smartphones, camera-focused marketing

• Estimated African Market Share:

  ~3% to 4%

Honor split from Huawei in 2020 and spent the following years rebuilding distribution from scratch. The strategy paid off. Canalys clocked Honor's African shipments growing 287% in a single quarter, the fastest expansion of any brand tracked on the continent. Egypt and Kenya have been its early strongholds, and retailers are giving it more shelf space every quarter.

7. Oppo

• Parent Company:

  BBK Electronics

• Key Focus Areas:

Mid-range Android devices, camera and design marketing

• Estimated African Market Share:

  ~4% to 5%

Oppo built its African presence around retail partnerships and billboard marketing that mimics the flashy campaigns it runs in Southeast Asia. Nigeria, Egypt and Algeria are its main markets. Growth has been steady rather than explosive, with Canalys recording a 22% shipment increase in one recent quarter, enough to hold its position without threatening the leaders.

6. Itel

• Parent Company:

  Transsion Holdings

• Key Focus Areas:

  Feature phones, ultra-budget smartphones

• Estimated African Market Share:

  ~5% to 10%

Itel is Transsion's entry-level brand, and it does the job of keeping first-time buyers and rural users inside the ecosystem before they eventually trade up to Infinix or Tecno. In Nigeria, Itel's shipment share jumped 34% in a single quarter, the strongest growth of any Transsion label. Its phones rarely cost more than the equivalent of two months of mobile data, and that price point still defines a large share of the continent's first-time smartphone buyers.

5. Apple

• Headquarters:

  Cupertino, United States

• Key Focus Areas:

  Premium smartphones, ecosystem lock-in

• Estimated African Market Share:

  ~9% to 13%

Apple holds a share of the African market that would be unremarkable anywhere else in the world but counts as a genuine achievement here, given that an iPhone can cost more than the average monthly salary in several African economies. South Africa, Egypt and Nigeria's urban elite carry the brand. iPhone usage across the continent sits at roughly 15%, well below Apple's near 60% share of the North American market, and that gap is exactly why Apple treats Africa as a long-term growth bet rather than a market it already owns.

4. Xiaomi

• Headquarters:

  Beijing, China

• Key Focus Areas:

  Mid-range smartphones, value-for-spec positioning

• Estimated African Market Share:

  ~13% to 14%

Xiaomi has posted some of the fastest growth of any major brand on the continent, expanding shipments by 32% in a single quarter through its Redmi line. The Redmi 14C became a fixture in Nigerian and Egyptian retail stores by offering specifications that undercut Samsung's equivalent Galaxy A models on price. Xiaomi's climb up this list has come almost entirely at the expense of Samsung and Huawei's mid-range offerings.

3. Infinix

• Parent Company:

  Transsion Holdings

• Key Focus Areas:

Mid-range smartphones, camera and gaming features

• Estimated African Market Share:

  ~15% to 22%

Infinix sits just behind its Transsion sibling Tecno in most West African markets, and in Nigeria the two brands run almost neck and neck. The brand built its reputation on gaming-oriented processors and large batteries at prices well under $150. Infinix also doubles as Transsion's step-up brand, giving Itel buyers somewhere to go once they are ready to spend a little more.

2. Samsung

• Headquarters:

  Suwon, South Korea

• Key Focus Areas:

  Full-range smartphones, from entry-level Galaxy A to premium Galaxy S and Z

• Estimated African Market Share:

~18% to 30%, depending on measurement

Samsung is the one brand that competes with Transsion at every price tier rather than just one. It leads South Africa outright and holds the largest single share of installed devices in active use across the continent, at close to 30% by some measurements. Its affordable Galaxy A-series now accounts for the bulk of its African shipments, a deliberate strategy to chase volume in markets where the flagship Galaxy S and Z lines remain out of reach for most buyers.

1. Tecno

• Parent Company:

  Transsion Holdings

• Key Focus Areas:

Budget and mid-range smartphones, localized camera and battery engineering

• Estimated African Market Share:

  ~20% to 24%

Tecno tops this list as the single best-selling phone brand in Africa's largest market, Nigeria, where it commands close to a quarter of all shipments on its own. The brand's engineers built cameras that calibrate exposure for darker skin tones and packed batteries as large as 6,000 mAh into devices priced for buyers who have never owned a smartphone before. Backed by Transsion's after-sales network, Carlcare, which now runs more than 1,200 service points across the continent, Tecno turned a design philosophy built around African usage patterns into the market position every rival on this list is chasing.
