B5 Plus Company Limited has presented a GH¢400 million tax cheque to the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA).
The presentation comes on the heels of the Authority’s call on businesses and citizens to take greater responsibility for financing the country’s development.
B5 Plus, chaired by Mukesh Thakwani, operates in Ghana’s iron and steel manufacturing sector, its contribution illustrating how industrial activity can support national development through the revenue it generates for the state.
At the presentation, the Commissioner of the GRA’s Domestic Tax Revenue Division, Dr. Martin Kolbil Yamborigya, commended the company’s tax compliance and encouraged other businesses and individuals to follow its example.
“The taxes paid by B5 Plus are not simply figures on a tax statement. They represent a contribution towards the provision of roads, schools, hospitals, security, social interventions and other public services that benefit all of us,” he said.
His remarks placed tax compliance within a broader partnership between business, citizens and the state. A stronger domestic revenue base, he argued, was essential to sustaining development and reducing dependence on borrowing and external assistance.
For Ghana, that argument connects industrial development with the everyday needs of its people. Businesses that produce, trade and meet their tax obligations help provide the resources from which public services can be financed.
The Commissioner also stressed the duty of government to account for the resources entrusted to it.
“Government has a responsibility to use public resources efficiently and accountably,” he said, adding that the GRA must administer tax laws fairly, efficiently and professionally.
That shared responsibility gives the engagement its wider national significance. Confidence in the tax system requires honest compliance, fair administration and public spending that serves the common good.
Dr. Yamborigya urged taxpayers to keep proper records, file accurate returns on time and pay the correct taxes. He also appealed to consumers to help reduce revenue leakage by requesting VAT invoices for applicable purchases.
“When you pay VAT, ask for your VAT invoice,” he said.
He encouraged the media to support public education and scrutiny, while reaffirming the GRA’s commitment to making compliance easier, fairer and more convenient.
Addressing B5 Plus, he concluded with a message linking corporate responsibility to Ghana’s future, saying, “Your compliance is your contribution. Your contribution is part of Ghana’s development.”
