PRETORIA - The City of Tshwane has temporarily shut down the Bronkhorstspruit Water Treatment Plant to allow for cleaning and the installation of equipment.
The City has begun flushing and disinfecting the affected water network and is conducting daily water-quality tests.
It says its chlorine supply has been secured for the next six to seven weeks.
More than 800 Bronkhorstspruit residents have been affected by gastrointestinal illness, with three people hospitalised.
An investigation has been ordered into the interruption of chlorine supplies and the failure to warn residents in time.
Following a preliminary report, the plant manager was suspended last Friday.

Tshwane mayor Nasiphi Moya said an external investigation had also been commissioned to examine several aspects of the incident and identify ways to improve the municipality’s systems.
To help restore access to safe water, the City has deployed 36 water tankers. Coca-Cola has also provided three standard-sized tankers and a 34,000-litre tanker, which is currently servicing the Bronkhorstspruit community.
“The focus is we must provide water in all the households so that we be able to reduce the number of infections,” said Moya.
Moya said all water storage facilities would be cleaned, disinfected and refilled.
“There are areas that are also receiving water through boreholes, there is testing that is happening there. Even for those buying from spaza shops, there is also testing through the environmental health colleagues.

“In terms of private tankers, TMPD has received all registration numbers to start following the tankers around to make sure we know where they get the water and who has tested that water.”
Moya said water-quality testing across the City would continue.
“The issue of chlorine has now been sorted while we deal with contractual issues. Rand Water is on site, and they have assured that they will be able to help us to get more so that we never run out. I can assure you that there is enough chlorine across the City of Tshwane.”
