Police Rescue Stolen Four-Day-Old Baby in Abia, Arrest Four Suspects

The Abia State Police Command has rescued a four-day-old baby allegedly stolen from her mentally unstable mother and arrested four suspects linked to the crime.

Police spokesperson, DSP Maureen Chinaka, said in a statement on Monday that operatives of the Violent Crimes Response Unit and Rapid Response Unit apprehended the suspects, Gladys Nathaniel, Victor Udochukwu, Chijioke Obunwa, and Onyeonoro Chinwe, on September 16, 2026.

According to the police, the suspects conspired to steal the infant and sell her to another person. Following investigations, both the baby and her mother were rescued.

The mother has since been released to her family for medical care, while the baby was handed over to the Ministry of Women Affairs for protective custody.

DSP Chinaka confirmed that the suspects are in custody and that investigations are ongoing at the State Criminal Investigation Department.

They will be charged to court once the probe is concluded.The police reiterated their commitment to tackling child trafficking and urged residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities.
