The Mayor of Accra, Michael Kpakpo Allotey, has announced a GH¢1,000 Christmas package for traders who comply with the Accra Metropolitan Assembly’s (AMA) red-line directive and operate within designated trading spaces.
The initiative is aimed at encouraging traders to adhere to the Assembly’s trading regulations while providing some financial support for their livelihoods during the festive season.
Mr Allotey announced the package during the November edition of the National Sanitation Day on Saturday, November 7, 2026, as part of efforts to ease congestion, improve sanitation and ensure the free movement of vehicles and pedestrians ahead of Christmas.
He said the Assembly recognised the importance of trading activities to the local economy and was committed to creating an environment where traders could operate their businesses without obstructing roads, bus stops and public transport terminals.
The Mayor, however, directed traders operating at bus stops to vacate the areas immediately, stressing that the spaces were strictly reserved for public transport operations.
He explained that traders who had appealed for an extension until Monday had been given additional time to relocate, warning that goods left at the bus stops after the deadline would be confiscated and donated to a children’s home.
Mr Allotey also urged traders to remain behind the designated red lines and conduct their businesses only within approved trading areas.
He assured traders that the Assembly was working to balance their economic interests with the need to maintain order, improve sanitation and ensure the smooth movement of vehicles and pedestrians across the capital.
The GH¢1,000 Christmas package is expected to serve as an incentive for traders to support the Assembly’s efforts to restore order in commercial areas during the busy festive season.
