COPE to Launch Investigation into Avant Garde Maritime Security Deal

The Parliamentary Committee on Public Enterprises (COPE) has decided to initiate a comprehensive investigation into the involvement of Avant Garde Private Limited in the maritime security service jointly operated by the Sri Lanka Navy and Rakna Security Lanka Limited.

COPE Committee Chairman Dr. Nishantha Samaraweera has pointed out that this partnership has caused a significant financial loss to the government treasury and state institutions.

A formal complaint is to be filed with the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption and the Criminal Investigation Department to conduct an in-depth investigation into whether public resources were misused and whether private parties illegally benefited from this controversial transaction.

The decision to take strict legal action at the parliamentary level regarding the maritime security transaction, which has been the subject of intense debate in the country in the past, has created considerable controversy at the national level.

Based on the progress of these investigations, it is expected that the relevant responsible parties will be subject to strict legal action and that the necessary steps will be taken to recover at least some of the financial resources lost by the government.

Political and economic experts point out that the decision taken by the COPE Committee with the aim of protecting the country’s public finances and state enterprises could pave the way for many more corruption investigations in the future.
