Munro fire five past Black River

A sizzling performance from seven-time champions Munro College saw them maintain their unbeaten run in the ISSA daCosta Cup preliminary round with a commanding 5-0 victory over Black River High at Munro College playing field yesterday.

Munro wasted little time getting on the scoresheet, breaking the deadlock in the opening minute through Izion Fraser who rose to head home.

Fraser and Kajaye Williams both scored twice, while Akel Vesprey added the other goal.

Williams doubled Munro’s lead in the fifth minute before completing his brace in the 24th. After being brought down in the box, Williams failed to convert the penalty after Black River’s goalkeeper Nishane Lewis came up with a huge save.

Moments after, Vesprey then converted from a Fraser assist in the 41st minute, sending the home side into the break with a commanding 4-0 advantage.

Fraser completed his brace in the 51st minute, finishing a cross by Vesprey to seal the comfortable victory.

Munro coach Everdean Scarlett said his main objective was to avoid defeat and maintain the team’s consistency at home.

“We first must give God thanks for the three points. We scored four goals in the first half, what more can a coach ask for? I think the guys came out today and gave a good account of themselves,” said Scarlett.

“We made some changes in the second half and brought on some younger players. As you can see, the intensity of the game didn’t drop, and I think they came on and gave a good account of themselves,” he added.

Meanwhile, Black River coach Vayden Hayle admitted his team struggled defensively after conceding early.

“I just think tactically we were a bit indisciplined, and then we conceded that early goal, which I think kind of blew the wind out of the young men. I think we just did not bounce back from that,” said Hayle.

Hayle added, “We knew it was going to be a tough game because Munro have been playing well. I think if we were just disciplined enough, we would have lessened some of the chances that Munro created.”
