Under landmark contracts executed with the Tanzania Railways Corporation (TRC), Hyundai Rotem is supplying a formidable fleet consisting of 80 Electric Multiple Unit (EMU) trains and 17 state-ofthe-art electric locomotives for the national Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) network.
The operational deployment of Hyundai Rotem’s advanced EMUs along the vital Dar es Salaam–Dodoma commercial corridor marks the formal inception of electrified rail transport in East Africa.

Hyundai Rotem’s sophisticated rail engineering has delivered a transformative, leap in regional transport capacity and operational standards: Drastic Velocity Enhancement: Replacing legacy diesel trains, which were historically constrained to low speeds of 30 to 40 km/h, Hyundai Rotem’s high-speed EMUs operate reliably at commercial speeds of up to 160 km/h. This speed drastically cuts transit time between the commercial capital of Dar es Salaam and the administrative capital of Dodoma from nearly a full day to approximately three hours.
Passenger-Centric Innovation: Custom-tailored to meet the specific climate and operational demands of the East African transport market, the 589-passenger capacity units offer premium amenities. These include seamless integrated Wi-Fi, modern climate control systems, ergonomic seating, and comprehensive CCTV surveillance, setting a paramount standard for public transit and passenger comfort in the region. Environmental Leadership & Sustainability: By fundamentally shifting the country’s main transit spine away from fossil fuels to clean electric power, Hyundai Rotem’s technology substantially curbs carbon emissions and air pollutants.

“In Tanzania, we supply mid-to-high-speed EMUs mostly used for intercity routes, similar to those operating in Germany and other advanced nations with electrified rail systems,” stated Mr Tony, a senior Hyundai Rotem official in Tanzania. He added: “We take immense pride in seeing our trains serve as Tanzania’s first electric locomotives.
We remain fully committed to cooperating closely with Tanzanian authorities in managing, maintaining, and expanding these modern transport services moving forward.” Newly introduced to the Tanzanian public, these highspeed EMU trains have been affectionately dubbed Treni Mchongoko in Kiswahili (in English “a popular moniker inspired by their sleek, aerodynamic design, high operational speeds, and remarkable ride stability”).
By introducing the region’s first fully operational electrified EMU fleet, Hyundai Rotem has effectively positioned Tanzania as the undisputed pioneer of modern rail logistics across Eastern and Central Africa.
Furthermore, Tanzania stands as the first nation in the region to purchase and deploy modern EMU locomotives for dual passenger and freight operations. This capability addresses an urgent, long-standing bottleneck for neighbouring land linked states that heavily depend on efficient overland transit from maritime ports on the Indian Ocean.
“Tanzania should take immense pride in being the pioneer nation in Eastern and Central Africa to own and operate these EMU locomotives, fasttracking national economic development through superior logistics,” Tony added. He further emphasised that Hyundai Rotem is equipping the country with comprehensive mobility facility solutions, including automated logistics systems and specialised steel manufacturing facilities embedded with advanced pollutant emission reduction technology.
Echoing these strategic benefits, former TRC DirectorGeneral Masanja Kadogosa noted that the expanded SGR corridors will streamline the movement of heavy freight for export via Indian Ocean ports, while facilitating cross-border cargo transit to Uganda and South Sudan. Building on these initial operational triumphs, Hyundai Rotem plans to actively participate in subsequent project phases to supply additional rolling stock and technical guidance as the SGR network expands further inland.

Massive investments in highspeed electric rail are proving equally transformative for Tanzania’s vibrant tourism sector by establishing efficient overland transit options to complement conventional air routes. Similar intercity units deployed by Hyundai Rotem in Egypt, Tunisia, and Morocco have demonstrated clear success in boosting international tourist traffic, a model now bearing fruit in East Africa.
According to industry analysts, the electrified SGR network directly resolves three historic constraints that have historically limited African travel: Transit time, elevated costs, and passenger confidence. Time Efficiency: By cutting land travel times between Dar es Salaam and Dodoma from up to 10 grueling hours or more by road to around 3~4 hours by express rail, transit friction is minimised.
Affordability & Accessibility: SGR services offer an affordable, reliable alternative to expensive short-haul air charters, opening up accessible day trips for local and foreign travellers to major wildlife destinations like Mikumi National Park in Morogoro. Regional Hub Transformation: The high-speed rail framework enables Tanzania to evolve from a static, terminal travel destination into a dynamic, interconnected circulation hub through which intra-African and international tourist flows move effortlessly.
President Samia has repeatedly highlighted tourism as a premier foreign exchange earner and key driver under Vision 2050. As future rail links are completed, international visitors, including an expanding demographic of South Korean tourist, are expected to increasingly adopt rail safaris as a core component of their East African itineraries.
