Gachagua demands fuel deal accountability, accuses Ruto of deception

The former deputy president escalates his public offensive against his successor with pointed questions about a government-to-government oil arrangement he says Kenyans cannot afford to ignore

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua yesterday demanded full public accountability over Kenya’s government-to-government fuel deal, directly accusing President William Ruto of deception and questioning how much ordinary Kenyans may have lost in the arrangement.

Gachagua, who was removed from office through an impeachment process in October 2024, has intensified his public campaign against the Ruto administration. His latest broadside targets the G-to-G fuel import framework, a government-to-government arrangement Kenya entered to stabilise fuel supply and reduce costs, which has attracted persistent questions about pricing, transparency and the terms of the agreements with supplier nations.

“If he can con a president, how much has he stolen from Kenyans?” Gachagua said, framing his demand for accountability in language designed to resonate with ordinary citizens bearing the weight of elevated fuel costs.

The remarks represent a significant escalation. Gachagua is no longer a figure on the political periphery making generalised criticisms — he is a former insider, with detailed institutional knowledge, making specific allegations about a policy that directly affects every Kenyan household.

The government has yet to respond publicly to his latest claims. That silence may not hold for long.
