President John Dramani Mahama has dissolved the Governing Board of the National Sports Authority (NSA) with immediate effect as part of a wider shake-up of boards of several state-owned institutions.
The decision, contained in a letter dated 2 September 2026, affects the current NSA board, which was constituted to serve from 2025 to 2029.
The directive is part of a broader decision by the President to dissolve the boards of a number of state institutions, including Prestea Sankofa Gold Limited, Bulk Oil Storage and Transportation Company Limited (BOST), VALCO, Consolidated Bank Ghana Limited, Ghana Post Company Limited, the Road Maintenance Trust Fund, TDC Ghana Limited and the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC).
The affected institutions have been instructed to take the necessary steps, in accordance with the relevant laws and governing instruments, to formally notify members of their outgoing boards.
In the meantime, management teams will remain responsible for the day-to-day running of the institutions until new boards are constituted.
However, the management of the affected organisations has been directed not to take major policy, financial or contractual decisions that would ordinarily require board approval without prior authorisation from the appropriate authority.
The dissolved NSA board was chaired by Dr Fred Awaah and included representatives from the NSA, National Sports College, the Ministries of Sports and Recreation, Finance and Education, as well as members representing the security services, tertiary institutions, the National Paralympic Committee and the Ghana Olympic Committee.
Other members included distinguished sporting personalities and individuals with experience in sports development.

The development comes at a crucial period for Ghanaian sport, with the Black Stars preparing for their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign.
Ghana are scheduled to face The Gambia on 27 September, with attention also focused on the country's sports infrastructure and the state of its major stadia.
The Accra Sports Stadium and Baba Yara Sports Stadium have recently come under renewed scrutiny over their condition, with concerns about maintenance and safety prompting calls for significant renovation.
The dissolution of the NSA board could therefore lead to changes in the administration and management of Ghana's sporting infrastructure as the government prepares to reconstitute the board.
