An international human rights delegation visited the regional office of Morocco’s Ombudsman Institution in Laayoune on Tuesday to learn about its work in mediation, redress and protecting citizens’ rights in their dealings with public authorities.
The delegation was led by Teresa McCordy of the Economic, Social and Cultural Rights Section of the U.N. Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights in Geneva.
She was received by Cherif Laroussi, the regional delegate of Morocco’s Ombudsman Institution in Laayoune, who presented an overview of the office’s mandate and its role in receiving and processing complaints and communicating with the relevant government authorities.
The visit provided an opportunity to discuss the regional office’s approach to institutional communication and its efforts to make mediation and redress mechanisms more accessible to citizens.
The delegation and Moroccan officials also exchanged views on ways to strengthen rights protection and improve the quality of public services.
The meeting was also attended by Moulay Lahcen Naji, chairman of the Independent Commission for Human Rights in Africa.
McCordy expressed interest in the experience presented by the regional office, particularly its mechanisms for handling complaints and communicating with public institutions.
The visit formed part of broader efforts to promote cooperation and exchange practices in the fields of human rights and mediation.
