The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has arrested 12 suspects after a rowdy group of youths allegedly attempted to disrupt First Lady Rachel Ruto’s convoy in Siaya town.
The incident occurred on Tuesday, September 8, 2026, following a women’s economic empowerment function at the Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) grounds. According to the DCI, the youths attempted to force their way through a secured gate as the dignitary convoy headed toward a helicopter landing site, eventually hurling stones at police officers deployed to secure the entrance.
Officers on the ground quickly suppressed the disturbance, taking 12 primary suspects into custody at a local Siaya police station, where they are being processed for court arraignment. Detectives confirmed that investigations remain active to identify and prosecute any additional individuals involved in the chaos.
The disturbance adds to a series of high-profile VIP security lapses this year, including a May incident in Kilifi County where a man breached President William Ruto’s security detail. Those earlier lapses prompted Inspector General Douglas Kanja to execute a major security overhaul, which included replacing the commander of the Presidential Security and Escort Unit.
