Brazilian Navy races to rescue injured Golden Globe sailor in South Atlantic

An urgent rescue operation is underway in the South Atlantic after Golden Globe Race competitor Guy de Boer reported a serious deterioration in his condition following an accident aboard his yacht, SPIRIT.

The American sailor requested immediate medical evacuation after telling race organisers that he could no longer use his left arm, stand properly or maintain his balance. He also reported being unable to eat.

The Brazilian Navy has since dispatched a vessel towards his position, with a helicopter rescue planned to transfer him from his yacht for medical assistance.

The developing situation has raised concerns about the dangers faced by sailors competing in one of the world’s most demanding solo sailing challenges, where competitors spend extended periods at sea with limited access to outside assistance.

According to the Golden Globe Race (GGR), De Boer first reported an accident to race manager Georgie Vintner on 3 November.

The incident had happened on 2 November, when he fell inside SPIRIT’s cabin, struck his head and possibly lost consciousness.

Following the report, Vintner instructed him to seek immediate medical advice from the race’s medical support team.

Dr Spike Briggs of MSOS subsequently discussed De Boer’s condition with the GGR team and advised against him continuing in the competition.

Instead, the doctor recommended that he sail downwind towards Punta del Este, Uruguay, where he could receive medical attention.

Although De Boer acknowledged the medical advice, he initially wanted to monitor his recovery and explore the possibility of continuing the race.

On 4 November, he reported some improvement. However, the medical team’s concerns about the risks of remaining at sea had not changed.

By 5 November, further balance difficulties had been reported by his manager, with De Boer indicating that he intended to change course and head towards Rio de Janeiro.

Concerns about the sailor’s safety escalated as his family sought information about his condition.

Late on 6 November, family members contacted Brazil’s Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC), seeking assistance and information about the situation.

In the early hours of 7 November, they also contacted GGR.

Race organisers supplied the Brazilian authorities with SPIRIT’s safety documentation, emergency equipment information, communication details, emergency beacon identification codes and photographs of the yacht.

At that stage, GGR confirmed that it had not received a direct evacuation request from De Boer.

That changed shortly after 16:00 UTC on 7 November, when the sailor contacted race organisers directly by satellite telephone.

He reported that his condition had deteriorated significantly, leaving him unable to use his left arm, stand or maintain his balance. He also said he was unable to eat.

GGR immediately advised him to activate his emergency position-indicating radio beacon (EPIRB), keep his satellite telephone switched on and have his emergency grab bag nearby.

The organisation notified MRCC Brazil at 16:20 UTC, followed by an official situation report requesting urgent evacuation assistance at 16:30 UTC.

SPIRIT’s satellite position updates were also increased to every 30 minutes to help rescue authorities monitor the yacht’s movements.

The rescue operation gathered momentum as Brazilian authorities received further medical and technical information.

At 18:36 UTC on 7 November, a Brazilian doctor contacted GGR representative Don McIntyre, who provided De Boer’s satellite telephone numbers.

The sailor’s medical file was subsequently forwarded to Brazilian rescue coordination authorities at 18:54 UTC.

In an update shared by the Golden Globe Race on Sunday morning, 8 November, organisers confirmed that the Brazilian Navy Corvette BARROSO (V-34) was steaming at maximum speed towards SPIRIT.

The plan was for the vessel to get close enough to launch a helicopter, with an estimated arrival at the yacht of approximately 06:00 UTC.

Two Brazilian Navy divers were expected to be involved in recovering De Boer from the yacht.

However, the operation faced an additional challenge: SPIRIT was still moving, and organisers needed De Boer to slow down or stop the vessel so that the helicopter rescue could take place safely.

GGR initially struggled to establish communication with him, despite sending messages explaining what was required.

A subsequent update confirmed that De Boer made a brief satellite telephone call at approximately 07:15 UTC, acknowledging receipt of the messages and confirming that he was prepared to slow down or stop the yacht as instructed.

Organisers also noted that SPIRIT had been sailing away from the approaching Brazilian Navy vessel overnight, meaning the rescue team still needed to close the distance before launching the helicopter.

De Boer was instructed to remain stationary.

The incident highlights the physical and logistical challenges associated with the Golden Globe Race, an around-the-world sailing competition that places extraordinary demands on participants.

Unlike conventional sailing events, competitors face long periods at sea with limited opportunities for assistance.

An accident that might be relatively straightforward to manage on land can become considerably more complicated when a sailor is hundreds or thousands of kilometres from immediate medical support.

In De Boer’s case, the reported head injury, loss of balance and deterioration in mobility have made an emergency evacuation necessary.

The race organisers have stressed that his safety remains their priority and that they are continuing to support Brazilian authorities with the information required to coordinate the rescue.

As the operation develops, attention remains on SPIRIT and the Brazilian Navy’s efforts to reach the yacht.

The latest updates provided by GGR confirmed that De Boer has acknowledged the rescue instructions and is prepared to stop the vessel.

Further information about the completed evacuation and his medical condition is expected once confirmed by the race organisers.
