Police in Chitipa have arrested a 46-year-old man, Mtitima Nyondo, after he was allegedly found in possession of suspected counterfeit Zambian and Tanzanian currency.
Chitipa Police spokesperson Matthews Mfune said Nyondo was arrested on September 8, 2026, at around 11:00 hours at Chitipa Trading Centre following a tip-off from well-wishers that he was in possession of suspected counterfeit Zambian kwacha.
Mfune said during questioning, Nyondo allegedly admitted to possessing the suspected counterfeit money and led detectives to a lodge where he had reportedly hidden it.
“Police detectives recovered 7,200 Zambian kwacha and 10,000 Tanzanian shillings, all suspected to be counterfeit. The money has been seized and is being kept as an exhibit,” said Mfune.
The suspect remains in police custody as investigations continue to establish the source of the suspected counterfeit currency and determine whether other people are involved.
Nyondo is expected to appear in court once the necessary paperwork has been completed.
He hails from Mbilima Village in the area of Senior Chief Mwaulambia in Chitipa District.
