MALAWI FIRST LADY URGES TIWA SAVAGE TO USE HER INFLUENCE TO FIGHT GENDER-BASED VIOLENCE
Malawi’s First Lady, Professor Gertrude Mutharika, has called on artists and other influential public figures to use their platforms to help combat gender-based violence (GBV).
Professor Mutharika made the call at Kamuzu Palace in Lilongwe during a meeting with Nigerian musician and actress Tiwatope Omolara Savage, popularly known as Tiwa Savage.
The First Lady said all available resources and platforms should be utilised in efforts to end gender-based violence. She specifically urged Savage to use her international influence to amplify advocacy and raise awareness against GBV.
Malawi’s Minister of Gender, Children, Disability and Social Welfare, Mary Navicha, described the meeting as an important step in strengthening efforts to combat gender-based violence.
Also present was United Nations Resident Coordinator in Malawi, Rebecca Adda-Dontoh, who said the UN had invited Savage to support Malawi’s fight against GBV by leveraging her international platform.
Savage, who has spoken publicly about her own experience of gender-based violence, said she remains passionate about the fight and is committed to using her voice to support survivors and advance the cause.
