LASWA Completes Module Four of Ferry Safety Mentoring Programme

The Lagos State Waterways Authority, LASWA has announced the successful completion of Module Four of its Ferry Safety Development and Mentoring Programme, with the latest phase focused on strengthening participants’ technical knowledge of marine engine systems.

The authority said August 2026 marked a significant milestone in the capacity-building programme as mentees received both theoretical and practical exposure to marine engineering and engine operations under the theme, “Introduction to Engine Systems.”

According to LASWA, the first two weeks of the module featured self-paced learning facilitated by Engr. Jeremiah Akwemioh, a veteran of the Nigerian Navy, who brought his extensive experience in marine engineering and engine systems to the training.

The third week featured an “Ask the Expert” virtual session with Interferry mentors, Joep Bollerman, Vice President of Passenger Ships and Director of the Cruise Ship Center of Expertise at Lloyd’s Register, and Francesco Ruisi, Global Passenger Ship Segment Director at Lloyd’s Register.

The programme culminated in the fourth week with a practical onboard training session aboard MV ONONEZE, an American Bureau of Shipping, ABS-classed vessel owned by Fymak Marine & Oil Services Nigeria Limited.

LASWA said the vessel, equipped with four Cummins main engines, four propellers and a bow thruster, with a combined output of 5,368 kilowatts (7,200 brake horsepower), provided the mentees with valuable hands-on exposure to marine engine operations.

During the practical session, participants observed the operation of the vessel’s engines and key auxiliary systems, including generators, purifiers, sewage treatment plants, air compressors and piping systems.

The authority expressed appreciation to the management and crew of Fymak Marine & Oil Services for supporting the practical training.

It specifically acknowledged Captain Aniekan Udo, Chief Officer Abiodun Erewa, Chief Engineer Emmanuel Ezekudo and Engr. Paul Etarijakpere for sharing their operational experience and providing practical insights to the mentees.

LASWA also commended the module facilitator, Engr. Akwemioh, as well as the Interferry mentors, Bollerman and Ruisi, for their contributions to the programme.

The authority further recognised the support of Interferry, Shari Corrigan, Director of Conferences and Finance and Executive Sponsor; FerrySafe; LASWA; the Lagos State Government; and Oluwadamilola Emmanuel, Special Adviser to the Governor on Blue Economy.

LASWA said their continued support has been instrumental to its efforts to develop technical capacity and promote higher safety standards within the ferry transportation sector.

Looking ahead, the authority announced that Module Five of the programme, which will focus on Safety Management Systems, is scheduled to commence in September 2026.

The next module will be led by Mike Corrigan, Chief Executive Officer of Interferry, giving participants an opportunity to learn directly from a leading international figure in ferry safety and operations.

LASWA said the continuation of the programme underscores its commitment to developing a highly skilled workforce and raising safety standards across Lagos waterways.

“The journey continues. The standard rises,” the authority stated.
