Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville has suggested that two first-team Manchester United players should not be happy about Lisandro Martinez’s bombshell actions.
Manchester United’s 2-0 defeat to Atletico Madrid in the Champions League on Tuesday evening was overshadowed by Lisandro Martinez’s explosive reaction.
Martinez put Man Utd’s hierarchy on blast over the Premier League club’s summer spending and the 28-year-old Argentine took a major swipe at Jason Wilcox.
The 2022 World Cup winner has since come out on social media and Martinez issued a lengthy statement to clear up his striking words in his post-match interview.
Man Utd legend Gary Neville thinks that Bruno Fernandes and Harry Maguire should hold Lisandro Martinez to account
Atletico Madrid comfortably outperformed Manchester United at the Metropolitano Stadium and the scrutiny on Michael Carrick intensified after Tuesday’s Champions League defeat. Pablo Barrios broke the deadlock for Atletico in the first minute before Ademola Lookman netted for the La Liga club deep into the second half.
Lisandro Martinez’s post-match interview for Man Utd has sparked a polarising reaction online. The former Ajax star has earned praise from some sections for holding the Ineos regime to account, while others have suggested that Martinez was throwing his team ‘under the bus’ after their 2-0 loss.
Gary Neville has now insisted that senior Red Devils players like Bruno Fernandes and Harry Maguire should be raising questions about Martinez’s remarks on United.
“Now, obviously, he was talking about the club’s ambition to sign new players,” he said on The Overlap’s Stick to Football podcast.
“That is a direct attack on the players that you’re playing with. So, when Martinez says they should have brought more players in, he’s directly attacking his teammates.
“If I was a player this morning, if I was Bruno Fernandes and I was Harry Maguire and the other senior players, I’d be absolutely fuming with him because he’s basically saying that some of us shouldn’t be here and we should be bringing more players in.”
United legend Neville put Martinez’s comments into the context of the statement that Wayne Rooney released in 2010 about his desire to leave Old Trafford. The 51-year-old former Man Utd captain claimed that both he and Ryan Giggs confronted Wayne Rooney about the comments that he made.
“Wayne Rooney made a statement back in 2010 where he said that basically the club weren’t ambitious enough around signing players,” Neville explained.
“To me, that is a direct criticism of his teammates, saying that they’re not good enough because they should be signing more players. So, when Lisandro Martinez says… So, I’ve got a problem with it from a player’s perspective.
“We made, to be fair, me and Giggsy spoke with Wazza the morning after and he apologised to all the players and he apologised publicly because we said, ‘Why are we not good enough in the dressing room? Do you not think we’re good enough to win the league?’
“That’s what I think he’s [Martinez] saying.”
United will now return to Premier League action and the Red Devils will travel away to Elland Road to face Leeds United on Sunday afternoon. The Red Devils’ upcoming Premier League clash is slated for a 2pm kick-off time in the UK.
