Ga Manste Tennis Open begins today

The inaugural edition of the Ga Manste Tennis Open Championship begins today, October 19, 2026, at the Accra Sports Stadium and will conclude on October 24.

The six-day tournament features competitive action across the men’s and women’s singles competitions, as well as wheelchair tennis.

A key highlight of the event is a star-studded exhibition match featuring prominent Ghanaian sports and media personalities.

Among those set to feature are former Black Stars captains Stephen Appiah and Asamoah Gyan, alongside well-known figures such as Lexis Bill and Dr Pounds.

The tournament was officially launched at the Ga Manste Palace in Accra by His Royal Majesty King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II.

The launch established a vision that goes beyond a one-time tournament, positioning the initiative as a long-term movement and an annual celebration dedicated to discovering and nurturing young talent across Ghana and the wider African continent.

Forming an important part of the broader activities organised to celebrate the 2026 Homowo festival, the tournament comes with high hopes of securing a permanent place on the national sports calendar.

Beyond the court, the tournament aims to foster unity, inspire youth development, instil discipline in young players and create pathways to educational scholarship opportunities.

Organisers also plan to use the event to establish new community courts and strengthen sports programmes in schools.

As action begins today, the tournament marks a significant step towards broadening the appeal of tennis locally while showcasing Ghana’s sporting potential to the world.
