Namadingo, Temwah celebrate love in ‘My Woman’

Musician Namadingo has released a new song, My Woman featuring Temwah in the romantic expression celebrating a woman.

The song celebrates love that goes beyond physical attraction as alluded to by the first line: “Chauta anam’patsa zonse,” loosely translated to imply that beauty radiates from her face as she wears a smile that resembles that of her mother.

The song says the woman cheers her man even when he is losing, smiles at him when he is sad and prays for him in difficult times. From praising a beautiful woman, the narration extends to celebrating a partner who remains supportive even in trouble.

Leads the song: Namadingo. | Nation

The first stanza goes: “Chauta anam’patsa zonse. Nkhope ngati amakewo. Nde muli ka smile. Saazitengela mkomwe eh eh. Olo kunjenjemerako. Anapanga chisankho. Olo ndikuluza amandichemelera. Ndikakhumudwa nandisekelera. Amagwada pansi nandipemphelera. Ndikasungulumwa amandichengetera.”

The refrain goes: “My woman, can you see my woman. My woman, can you see my woman.”

The chorus is simple, catchy and repetitive. As such, it is easy to sing along to.

Namadingo is widely regarded by music critics and fans alike as one of the country’s premier vocalists.

It is, therefore, no surprise that one of the standout elements in My Woman is the vocals.

Mostly, Namadingo uses his voice calculatedly with straight notes and little breath to add smoothness, thereby matching the song’s romantic aspect.

His sound dwells in a slightly thick abode. His lines are straight with barely-noticeable runs splashed sparsely. As technically gifted as he is, he restrains himself from unnecessary runs or high notes. He expresses affection through simple phrases, tone and little musical ornamentals.

Temwah also adds vocal spices to the song. In the second verse, Temwah sings an octave above Namadingo, who rides on the melody, sparsely such as in the lines: “And I’m so grateful for all you do” and “Olo ndikuluza amandichemelera. Ndikakhumudwa nandisekelera… Ndikasungulumwa amandichengetera.” She also infuses the verse with wonderful adlibs.

The song glides around the 1-5-6-4 chord progression. The progression is most common in love songs. The progression, in the chambers of music, tells a story of love and, in the song, provides a foundation for the vocals and lyrics to complete the task.

Another highlight of the song is the visual element. The video places Namadingo and Temwah, who play the role of actors, within everyday environments as characterised by the motorcycles, untarred roads and ordinary township surroundings. The shots of the couple interacting, smiling and sharing romantic moments emphasise the song’s theme of romance.

Writer and music enthusiast Emmanuel Chikuse praised the song’s production, catchy hook, first stanza and the emotional contribution of the violin, but felt the second stanza was weaker.

He said: “The beat selection. The hook is catchy. The songwriting in the first stanza is excellent. The inclusion of the violin added an emotional layer. The singing of both Temwah and Namadingo is also its strength.

“The only weakeness I see is its second stanza. Namadingo weakened it by lazy songwriting. It does not sound as organic as the first one. He was trying too much. He filled it up with some clichéd expressions ‘Ndinapanga chani to deserve you/all that we have been through’ is the line i mean.”

Music fan Brian Kachitsa said the song is a refreshing love track that prioritises sincerity over drama.

He said: “The song shines through its heartfelt lyrics, smooth Afro-fusion sound and the natural chemistry between the two artists. Temwah’s vocals add warmth and balance while Namadingo’s storytelling keeps the song relatable.

“Rather than chasing trends, the song celebrates loyalty and appreciation in a way that feels honest and human. It may not be his most experimental song, but it is certainly one of his most heartfelt.”
