Barcelona and Real Madrid are among the clubs monitoring Gabriel’s situation at United, according to ESPN reporter Rob Dawson. Club sources also stress that the youngster’s current deal will not be cancelled despite his request.

Gabriel can sign scholarship forms once he turns 16, which is on October 6. He can move to a European side because he obtains an Irish passport.

It is understood that Real Madrid plan to allow Gabriel to adapt to Spanish football by playing him in their B-team, similarly to Martin Odegaard, who later signed for Arsenal in a deal worth £34m. There’s no guarantee that proposal will be enough to convince Gabriel or his dad, Joe O’Cearuill.

Man City and Arsenal are said to be monitoring the situation, which means Gabriel will have no shortage of offers if he does leave United.

A source has informed ESPN there’s a feeling within the industry that Gabriel will eventually perform a U-turn by agreeing to come back to United. This came before an update from BBC Sport suggesting Omar Berrada and Jason Wilcox have been in talks to convince Gabriel and his dad to reverse their decision.

The timing is poor because Gabriel was likely to be part of Michael Carrick’s squad for the Carabao Cup tie against Brighton. That was an opportunity to become United’s youngest-ever player, which now appears to have been selfishly spoiled by his dad.
