Lanterns Episode 7 Rewrites Hal Jordan’s Story With a Tragic Look at His Past

Hal Jordan has always been one of DC’s classic fearless heroes. In Lanterns, that confidence is still there, but Episode 7 gives it a much darker explanation.

“The Jordan Boys’ Legacy”, the penultimate episode of HBO’s Lanterns, aired on September 27, 2026, and takes John Stewart deeper into the mystery surrounding Hal’s death while exploring Hal’s childhood and his relationship with his father, Martin.

Instead of presenting Hal as the fearless Green Lantern fans already know, the episode uses his past to show where some of that confidence may have come from, giving the new DC Universe a different way to understand one of its most established heroes.

Hal’s Past Changes How We See His Fearlessness

The most important revelation in Episode 7 has little to do with aliens, Green Lantern technology, or the murder John is investigating. The episode reveals that Martin Jordan did not die in an accidental test-flight crash, as Hal’s traditional comic-book origin has established.

Instead, Martin deliberately crashed his aircraft and took his own life. Before his death, he left Hal a message explaining that he had been carrying pain throughout his life and believed his family would be better without him.

The Halogram, a digital version of Hal created years earlier, eventually describes this as the “Jordan boys’ legacy”. He then gives John an even more revealing explanation: “I’m not fearless because I’m brave. I’m fearless because I’m broken.” The confession reframes Hal’s confidence, suggesting that what looked like courage may have been shaped by pain he never fully understood.

The Baseball Scene Means More Than It First Appears

The episode begins in 1975, when a young Hal refuses to give up a baseball after coming close to pitching a perfect game. His determination leads to a confrontation with his teammates and coach, while Martin immediately steps in to defend his son.
