A 39-year-old man from Dangamvura, Mutare, has been sentenced to an effective two years in prison for driving a public service vehicle (kombi) while under the influence of alcohol.
Masawi Kasirai was convicted by the Mutare Magistrates’ Court after he was found driving a Toyota Hiace northward along the Mutare-Chimanimani Road on 19 June 2026 at around 10.10 am.
According to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), although there were no passengers on board at the time, police officers noticed from a distance that his vehicle was obstructing other road users.
Upon reaching a police roadblock, Kasirai was stopped and arrested. He was visibly intoxicated, and a breathalyser test confirmed that his alcohol level was 178mg per 100mls, almost six times the legal limit of 30mg per 100mls.
He was subsequently convicted of driving a public service vehicle while under the influence of alcohol.
In a statement on 1 September 2026, the NPA said it is committed to protecting all road users from reckless motorists and warned that offenders will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law.
