Government Gives Major Update On Wicknell Chivayo Helicopter Crash Probe
Chivayo Helicopter Crash Investigation: Government Gives Update
The investigation into the helicopter crash that killed businessman Wicknell Chivayo, his wife Lucy Muteke and three others has entered a more detailed phase, with Government expecting a preliminary report within 30 days of the 30 September accident.
The update was given after Cabinet received a briefing on the Bell 430 helicopter crash at Kudenga Farm in Mashonaland East Province. The aircraft had been travelling from Gandami in Chikomba District to Marondera when it went down.
According to TheNewsHawks, the Government said the helicopter was registered in Zimbabwe as Z-PED and operated by Sky Helicopters Private Limited.
Cabinet said the crash claimed all five people aboard, naming pilot Captain Calvin Soda, Chivayo, Muteke, Sanelisiwe Magagula and Captain Courage Mutavira.
Wreckage moved for forensic examination
Preliminary investigations at the crash site have now been completed, according to the Cabinet update.
The wreckage has been moved to the Government Hangar at Charles Prince Airport, where investigators will conduct a more detailed forensic examination with the assistance of international experts.
“The public is informed that a full investigation was instituted pursuant to Annexure 13 to the Convention on International Civil Aviation and Civil Aviation Act Chapter 13:15,” Government said.
The investigation will examine several areas, including the wreckage itself, meteorological information, maintenance records, and records relating to the operator and crew.
Preliminary report expected within 30 days
Government said the preliminary report is expected within 30 days of the accident, in line with international investigation standards.
That means investigators are expected to establish more details about the circumstances surrounding the fatal flight, although the Cabinet update does not identify a cause for the crash.
The authorities said further updates would be provided as the investigation continues and the affected families mourn their loss.
The crash occurred on 30 September 2026, meaning the 30-day period runs into late October.
For now, the investigation remains focused on gathering and examining technical evidence rather than assigning a cause.
