Paramount Chief Gawa Undi has reiterated the use of traditional ceremonies as platforms to unite and promote peace among citizens.
The traditional leader says cultural ceremonies such as Kulamba play an important role in strengthening relationships among people beyond national borders.
The Paramount Chief was speaking at Mkaika in Katete during the 2026 Kulamba traditional ceremony of the Chewa people of Zambia, Malawi and Mozambique in a speech was read on his behalf by Chairperson of Fundraising Committee for Kulamba Ceremony, Reuben Kamanga.
“Our culture should protect peace and unity, not tribalism and nationalism among ourselves,” he said.
The Paramount Chief said the Kulamba ceremony will continue to serve as an important platform for bringing people together and promoting cultural ties among the Chewa-speaking people of Zambia, Malawi and Mozambique.
The ceremony attracted people from different walks of life, representing Zambia, Malawi, Zimbabwe and countries beyond the borders of the three countries
And the Paramount Chief said the continued participation of people from world over, demonstrates the growing importance of traditional ceremonies in promoting cultural unity beyond borders.
The traditional leader urged young people to embrace education while remaining connected to their cultural heritage.
Meanwhile, Paramount Chief Chitimukulu of the Bemba people graced this year’s Kulamba Traditional Ceremony which was held under the theme “Unity beyond Borders.”
Mwine Lubemba who also spoke through his Secretary, Richard Mukuka reiterated his counterpart’s message of embracing culture as a means of protecting peace and unity.
He said traditional ceremonies such as Kulamba demonstrate how traditional institutions can bring people together despite differences in nationality and community.
He has also called on Government to continue working with traditional leaders in preserving culture and strengthening the traditional leadership framework.
The annual ceremony provides a platform for subordinate chiefs from Zambia, Malawi and Mozambique to pay homage to Paramount Chief Kalonga Gawa Undi.
The ceremony saw different dignitaries and representatives of government from all the three countries in attendance.
