Six students of Okuapeman Senior High School (SHS) have sustained injuries following reprisal attacks involving students of Okuapeman SHS and Mount Sinai Senior High School in the Akuapem North Municipality.
A report by Accra-based Citi News indicates that the incident occurred at about 2 a.m. on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, with several facilities at both schools reportedly damaged or destroyed during the violence.
According to the Headmaster of Okuapeman SHS, four of the injured students have been treated and discharged, while two remain on admission.
At Okuapeman SHS, the Visual Arts studio, a teachers’ office and seven classrooms were reportedly burnt. Examination papers and certificates were also destroyed in the process.
At Mount Sinai SHS, a storeroom and the boys’ washroom were among the facilities damaged by fire.
Chairperson of the Eastern Regional Security Council (REGSEC) and Eastern Regional Minister, Rita Akosua Adjei Awatey, said investigations were underway to establish the circumstances surrounding the violence.
She warned that students found culpable would be dealt with according to the law.
“We are building a nation, we are not destroying a nation. We are resetting and that includes resetting you. Investigations are going on, those who started throwing the stones will not be allowed to go scot-free,” she said.
She assured that the police would identify those responsible and ensure that they faced prosecution.
The Eastern Regional Police Commander, DCOP Owusu-Bempah, also condemned the violence and the reported attack on police officers deployed to the schools during the incident.
“It doesn’t take one person to fight, it takes two or more. We are not happy with what has happened. You are here to study and avail yourself to be morally upright and so you need to comport yourselves,” he said.
He said the Ghana Education Service (GES) would not shield students found to have participated in the attacks.
The Eastern Regional Director of Education, Dr Ivy Asantewaa, described the incident as unfortunate and cautioned students against resorting to violence.
Security agencies are continuing efforts to restore calm and prevent further violence as investigations proceed.
