George Municipality Elections 2026: DA Defends Garden Route Stronghold Amid Fierce PA Challenge

GEORGE, Western Cape — The upcoming George Municipality elections have transformed the Garden Route’s economic hub into one of South Africa’s most fiercely contested political battlegrounds. As the November 4 local government polls approach, the Democratic Alliance (DA) is fighting to maintain its historical stronghold against an aggressive challenge from the Patriotic Alliance (PA), with the campaign heavily focused on the stark contrasts in service delivery between the affluent city center and its surrounding townships.

George frequently markets itself as a city where roads are perfectly paved, potholes are nonexistent, and public transport runs on time. However, a starkly different reality exists just minutes away in the townships on the city’s doorstep. This geographic and economic divide has turned impoverished communities into political currency during the election season.

Jade Roberts, a 25-year-old unemployed resident who dreams of a career in music, embodies the undecided youth demographic. Though seen wearing a DA t-shirt distributed by canvassers, Roberts maintains that his voting intentions remain private. Despite acknowledging that little changes for poor communities between election cycles, he confirmed he will cast his ballot. “I want my people to be empowered,” he stated.

Defending the municipality’s record is Mayor Browen Johnson, who assumed office in November 2025. Highlighting the administration’s achievements while riding the “Go George” bus network, Johnson noted that the city prides itself on fixing potholes within a single business day. He pointed out that a R500 million Public Transport Network Grant (PTNG) is currently funding extensive road rebuilds, insisting these are planned investments tied to a stable government rather than election gimmicks.

Addressing critics who claim a “two-tier service delivery” system exists, Johnson firmly called the narrative false. He highlighted a R166 million investment in water upgrades for Pacaltsdorp over the last five years, alongside recent infrastructure improvements in two streets in Thembalethu.

Challenging the mayor’s narrative is Marchell Kleynhans, a former DA councillor of over a decade who defected to the PA in October 2025. Kleynhans alleges that service delivery is highly racialized and unequal. He claims that while the affluent town receives immediate responses to water leaks, residents in Thembalethu wait two to three days, and those in Pacaltsdorp wait up to four days. Furthermore, Kleynhans highlighted that despite a service delivery charter mandating a 10-day response for street lights, Pacaltsdorp often remains in darkness for 15 days.

Beyond service delivery, the elections are also highlighting deep-rooted historical conflicts. A local resident recently presented documentation acknowledging a dispute over ancestral land belonging to Khoi and San forebears, which is now threatened by approaching high-end developments. Mayor Johnson dismissed the surrounding anxiety as manufactured, accusing the PA of politicizing Khoi and San heritage. He clarified that the land does not belong to the George Municipality and cannot be sold by them, promising that heritage protections and access for local fishermen will be strictly maintained.

The political climate is further complicated by security concerns in neighboring Knysna, where political killings have prompted the mayor to order a comprehensive security risk assessment.

As the November 4 election day looms, the voters of George are left to weigh the paved roads and functioning buses of the city center against the unfulfilled promises of the townships, ultimately deciding whether this election cycle will finally bridge the divide.
