Trump Blames Fuel Prices and Republican Candidates as Democrats Seize Control of Both Chambers of Congress

Donald Trump has responded to the Republican Party’s disappointing performance in the midterm elections, admitting he expected the party to secure better results while insisting that the outcome did not represent a personal defeat.

Democrats secured control of both the House of Representatives and the Senate, delivering a major setback to Trump’s administration as several traditionally Republican states recorded unexpected Democratic victories.

Speaking to Fox News presenter Bret Baier during a late-night interview, Trump acknowledged that he had been surprised by the results.

“I’m a little bit surprised, I thought they’d (the Republicans) do better,” he said.

However, he pointed to the large crowds attending his campaign rallies as evidence of the continued enthusiasm among his supporters.

President Questions Why Campaign Rallies Failed to Deliver Votes

Trump spent considerable time discussing the attendance at his rallies, describing them as among the largest political gatherings he had witnessed.

He said thousands of people had attended his events, with some supporters unable to enter the venues and instead watching proceedings on large outdoor screens.

“Nobody’s ever seen anything like it,” Trump said, adding that he had left several states after holding rallies where crowds gathered outside in an attempt to gain entry.

Despite the turnout, the Republican candidates failed to secure the electoral support the president had expected.

Trump blamed some of the defeats on the candidates themselves, suggesting that several had failed to connect with the MAGA movement.

He described his supporters as exceptionally loyal but said some Republican candidates had not received their backing.

In other races, he argued that candidates had failed to motivate enough people to vote.

“And I wasn’t on the ballot. If I was on the ballot, they would have gotten out,” he said.

Trump Congratulates Democrats but Rejects Personal Defeat

Although Republicans suffered losses across several states, Trump acknowledged that Democrats had campaigned effectively.

“I think the Democrats did a good job, I really do. They fought hard.

They’ve been fighting me for a long time,” he said.

Asked whether he considered the outcome a defeat for his presidency, Trump repeatedly pointed out that he had not personally contested any of the elections.

“I don’t like to consider it a defeat for me. I wasn’t on the ballot,” he said.

He also confirmed that he would accept the election results when questioned about whether he would recognise the outcome.

“Yeah sure, I’ll accept them, why wouldn’t I,” Trump responded.

The president nevertheless has a history of questioning or disputing the results of previous US elections.

Trump Threatens to Veto Democratic Legislation

Trump indicated that he was prepared to work with Democrats on certain issues but identified several areas where he would not accept compromises.

He specifically mentioned immigration, border security, transgender participation in women’s sports and medical procedures involving transgender minors.

The president said there were numerous areas where cooperation between the two parties remained possible, including immigration.

However, he warned that he would reject legislation he considered unacceptable.

“They’ll send over things that are insane, and I’ll veto them,” Trump said.

He suggested that repeated vetoes could eventually force Democrats to approach his administration to negotiate agreements.

“After a couple of months of vetoes, they’ll call and they’ll say, ‘How do we get this stuff done?’ And we’ll work together,” he added.

Rising Fuel Prices Become Major Issue in Election Defeat

The president also acknowledged that the rising cost of living had contributed to the Republican Party’s poor performance.

He particularly addressed concerns about petrol prices, which featured prominently in voters’ responses to election polling.

Trump attributed the increase in fuel costs to the conflict with Iran, arguing that the financial consequences were temporary and would eventually produce longer-term benefits.

“I understand that, [but] I don’t agree with it. It’s a short term problem for long term gain… The gasoline was caused by Iran,” he said.

Fox News polling indicated that 87 per cent of voters were concerned about petrol prices, while 62 per cent blamed Trump for the situation.

The president challenged the network’s polling on his popularity, complaining that he had repeatedly been described as unpopular.

When Baier pointed out that the election results were broadly consistent with the network’s polling, Trump maintained that its surveys about him had been inaccurate for 12 years.

Earlier in the evening, he had also criticised Fox News on Truth Social over questions included in its election exit polls, describing them as “BULLS***”.

During a separate live broadcast, Trump sent a message to Fox News host Greg Gutfeld, insisting that he had inherited high prices and inflation from former president Joe Biden.

“I inherited the worst prices and inflation in history from Sleepy Joe.

Prices are heading down FAST!” the message read.

Trump Compares America’s Position With Europe

During the Fox News interview, Trump also shifted his attention to Europe’s economic and political challenges.

He contrasted the situation in several European countries with what he described as America’s economic performance.

“You look at Europe – it’s dying, you look at what’s going on in France and what’s going on in Italy and all the other countries, they’re going through a terrible time, they may not even survive frankly, and we’re thriving,” he said.

The president also returned to the election results, repeating that he did not consider the Republican losses a direct judgment against him.

He said there had been a particular mood among voters but maintained that he should not feel personally responsible for the outcome.

Truth Social Posts Reveal Trump’s Response to Democratic Control

Trump used Truth Social to communicate his response to the election results, sharing an image of a red MAGA baseball cap bearing the word “VETO”.

The image appeared alongside his warning that he would use his presidential veto powers against Democratic legislation.

In another late-night post, Trump again argued that the Republicans would have won decisively if he had appeared on the ballot.

“I wasn’t on the Ballot and if I was, we would have won IN A LANDSLIDE! Thank you for your attention to this matter,” he wrote.

The posts reinforced his position that he intended to challenge Democratic legislative proposals during the remainder of his presidency.

Democrats Win Traditionally Republican States

The midterm elections produced several unexpected results, with Democrats securing victories in states that have traditionally supported Republican candidates.

In Texas, Democratic newcomer James Talarico defeated Republican Ken Paxton, who had received Trump’s backing.

South Carolina also elected a Democratic senator for the first time since 1998.

Kansas recorded another major change, sending a Democrat to the US Senate for the first time since 1932, during the Great Depression.

Democrats also secured Senate victories in Iowa and Ohio, two states Trump had won by more than 10 percentage points in the 2024 presidential election.

Michigan delivered another closely watched result, with Democrat Abdul El-Sayed defeating Republican Mike Rogers.

El-Sayed’s victory made him the first Muslim elected to the US Senate.

Democratic supporters celebrated the results, with party members describing the nationwide victories as a “blue tsunami” or “Bluenami”.

Republican Losses Trigger Questions Over Trump’s Remaining Presidency

Although Trump was not personally seeking election, the midterms were widely viewed as a nationwide test of his administration and the Republican Party’s standing with voters.

The scale of the Democratic victories prompted immediate divisions within Republican circles, with attention turning to responsibility for the party’s performance.

Exit polling indicated that concerns about the cost of living and the administration’s handling of prices were among the issues influencing voters.

The results also raised questions about the political prospects of Vice President JD Vance, particularly regarding any ambitions he may have for the 2028 presidential election.

With Democrats controlling both chambers of Congress, Trump will face a different political environment during the final two years of his presidency.

Democrats Prepare Investigations Into Trump and His Allies

Democratic control of the House is expected to give lawmakers greater authority to investigate the president, members of his administration, his associates and family.

Congressman Robert Garcia is set to lead several investigations as chairman of the House Oversight Committee.

Garcia issued a brief response to the Republican losses and the change in congressional control, delivering a two-word message directed at Trump and his associates.

“Lawyer up,” he said.

The change in congressional leadership could also expose Trump to another impeachment effort, potentially becoming the third of his political career.

Trump Faces Greater Reliance on Presidential Veto Powers

The Democratic takeover of both chambers will make it more difficult for Trump to secure congressional approval for major parts of his legislative agenda.

With Republicans losing control of Congress, the president will have to rely more heavily on executive authority in areas where he retains constitutional and statutory powers.

These include immigration, tariffs, foreign policy and military decisions.

His veto power will also become an important tool for preventing Democratic-backed legislation from becoming law.
