The governorship candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Katsina State, Senator Ahmad Babba Kaita, has sympathised with 65 students of Government Science Secondary School (GSSS), Batagarawa, who reportedly fell ill after receiving medication against bilharzia.
Kaita also extended his sympathy to the students’ parents and the Batagarawa community over the incident, calling for an immediate investigation to establish the circumstances surrounding the illness.
In a statement issued on Tuesday by his spokesman, Abubakar Ahmed, the ADC candidate described the number of affected students as alarming and urged the state government to ensure that those responsible were brought to justice.
According to a report by Daily Trust on October 27, 2026, the students were administered drugs against bilharzia, a disease associated with the urinary tract. The newspaper also quoted the state Commissioner for Education as confirming the incident and saying the 65 students were responding to treatment.
Kaita said a video circulating on social media showing some of the affected students struggling had further underscored the need for urgent action.
He called for a thorough investigation, adding that anyone found culpable should face appropriate sanctions to prevent a recurrence.
The ADC candidate also urged the Katsina State Government to extend its investigation to other schools and communities, particularly in rural areas, to determine whether other students or residents had received similar medication.
He said urgent safety measures should be taken to protect anyone who might have been exposed to the drugs.
