Football Returns from International Break with a High Stakes Chiefs, Rollers Encounter
Mochudi Centre Chiefs and Township Rollers meet in a high-stakes Botswana Premier League clash on Saturday. Both sides are on four points and will arrive at the National Stadium from very different situations.
The two giants face each other at 7pm, with Chiefs having played three matches while Rollers have played two. The fixture offers both teams an opportunity to strengthen their position and gain momentum early in the campaign.
Chiefs go into the match under the guidance of newly appointed coach Reneilwe Letsholonyane following the departure of Miguel Corral Torreira. The former Bafana Bafana and Kaizer Chiefs midfielder has been given the responsibility of guiding the club and faces an immediate test against one of its biggest rivals.
Magosi, as Chiefs is affectionately known, started their campaign with a 1-0 defeat to Extension Gunners before responding with a 2-0 victory over Nico United. They then drew 1-1 with Tonota FC to take their points tally to four from three matches.
A return of four points for the well-resourced Magosi makes Saturday’s match an important fixture for Letsholonyane as he begins his tenure. The new coach will be looking to improve on the team’s early performances while giving the supporters something to celebrate against their traditional rivals.
Rollers, meanwhile, come into the match under coach Aupa Kowa after a difficult start that disrupted their preparations and player registration. Their opening league match against Jwaneng Galaxy ended in extraordinary circumstances. Rollers arrived with only seven players available and, just four minutes into the match, one of the seven players was injured.
With the team unable to field the required number of players, the referee stopped and abandoned the match. The situation was linked to financial and administrative challenges that had affected the club’s preparations and player registration. Rollers have since managed to register more players and have begun rebuilding their campaign.
Their first league outing against Morupule Wanderers, following the club’s normalisation, ended with a credible 1 – 1 draw. They followed that up with a strong performance against Extension Gunners, winning 3-0.
The victory gave Kowa’s side its first win of the campaign and provided confidence ahead of Saturday’s meeting with Chiefs. With four points from two matches, Rollers have collected the same number of points as Chiefs despite playing one match fewer.
Kowa will now want his team to build on the 3-0 victory and maintain the progress made since the troubled opening fixture. For Letsholonyane, the challenge is different. He has inherited a Chiefs side that has shown mixed results in its opening three matches and will now have to prepare the team for one of the biggest fixtures in the domestic game.
The Chiefs-Rollers rivalry is one of the most recognised in Botswana football and normally attracts considerable interest from supporters. Saturday’s match, however, is about more than rivalry and bragging rights. Both clubs need points, while the two coaches have different objectives going into the encounter.
Chiefs will be looking to improve their record of one win, one draw and one defeat, while Rollers will want to continue their recovery after registering four points from their first two completed matches. The fixture also provides an early opportunity for Letsholonyane and Kowa to demonstrate the direction they want their teams to take this season.
For Chiefs, a new coach brings a fresh start after Torreira’s departure. For Rollers, the priority is to ensure that the problems that disrupted their opening match do not derail their season. With both teams on four points, there is little separating them on the league table. The National Stadium will now provide the stage for another chapter in their long-running rivalry.
Kick-off is at 7pm on Saturday.
