Kenya Drops to Eighth as Ethiopia’s GDP Rebound Reshapes Africa’s Economic Rankings

Kenya has dropped from seventh to eighth place among Africa’s largest economies following a major revision of Ethiopia’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP), highlighting the growing economic competition between the two East African neighbours.

Ethiopia has moved from ninth to fifth position after rebasing its national accounts, with its economy now valued at $210.70 billion. The announcement was made by Ethiopian officials as part of efforts to update the country’s economic measurement system.

The revised figures incorporate previously underrepresented economic activities, including digital financial services, manufacturing, transport, telecommunications and other expanding sectors.

The development has significantly changed the continent’s economic rankings, putting Ethiopia ahead of Kenya and several other African economies.

However, the change needs to be understood carefully. GDP rebasing does not mean Ethiopia suddenly produced more goods and services overnight. Rather, it changes how economic activity is measured by incorporating sectors and businesses that previous calculations may have missed.

For Kenya, the development presents an important economic challenge. The country has built a strong position in financial services, technology, transport, agriculture and regional trade. Maintaining its competitiveness will require increased investment in manufacturing, infrastructure, exports and job creation.

The latest figures also raise questions about how African economies are measured and compared. Exchange rates, inflation and changes in statistical methods can significantly influence GDP rankings.

Ultimately, Kenya’s economic strength should not be judged by its continental position alone. Productivity, household incomes, employment opportunities and business growth matter far more to ordinary citizens.

Ethiopia’s rise is a reminder that economic competition across Africa is intensifying. Kenya must focus on sustainable growth if it hopes to remain among the continent’s leading economies.
