THE Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) has inaugurated a new office at Weija in the Ga South Municipality of the Greater Accra Region to improve service delivery and bring vehicle licensing and registration services closer to residents and businesses.
The facility is expected to address challenges associated with inadequate office space and overcrowding at the authority’s former premises, which had become too small to accommodate the growing number of clients.
Inaugurating the facility yesterday, the Minister of Transport, Mr Joseph Bukari Nikpe, said the project formed part of the government’s commitment to decentralising public services and improving access to efficient, quality service delivery.
He said the former office had served the community for several years, but its limited space no longer supported the standard of service expected by the public.
Mr Nikpe added that the opening of new offices across the country was part of broader efforts to make licensing services more accessible.
He noted that the DVLA had made significant progress in modernising its operations through technology and institutional reforms, including improvements in vehicle registration and number plate systems.
The Chief Executive Officer of the DVLA, Julius Neequaye Kotey, noted that the authority had commissioned 33 new offices out of a target of 40 within 18 months.
He expressed confidence that the target would be achieved and surpassed before the end of his tenure.
Mr Kotey said the Weija office, established on September 26, 2005, began operations with seven staff members, comprising three technical officers, two clerical staff and two accounting personnel.
He said the office had since grown into one of the busiest stations in the authority’s network, with more than 40 permanent staff, in addition to national service personnel and contract workers.
According to him, the office serves thousands of clients from Weija, Awoshie, Kasoa and surrounding communities.
He said the increasing demand for services had put pressure on the old facility, resulting in space constraints, congestion and operational challenges for both staff and clients.
The Manager of the DVLA, Weija branch, Samuel Owusu-Kwarteng, described the new office as a long-awaited intervention that would improve working conditions, increase operational capacity and enhance service delivery.
He urged staff to uphold high standards of professionalism, integrity and excellence in their dealings with clients.
Mr Owusu-Kwarteng assured residents of Bui and surrounding communities that the new office would operate with transparency and efficiency, with a strong focus on customer satisfaction.
At the event, the authority also launched its innovation and digital agenda, which seeks to modernise its operations through technology and digital service delivery.
