Joseph Ssebatindira: Uganda’s young Table Tennis star ready to make his mark at Youth Olympic Games

Fresh from a series of impressive performances, young table tennis star Joseph Ssebatindira is preparing to represent Uganda at the Youth Olympic Games in Senegal.

With his recent success behind him, he now has the chance to build on that momentum and add another major achievement to his growing international career.

The young Ugandan heads into the competition on the back of an impressive performance at the ITTF World Hopes Week and Challenge in Sheffield, England, where he defended his U-12 boys’ singles title on October 18, 2026.

It was a statement victory from a player who is steadily making his presence felt against international opposition.

In the final, Ssebatindira defeated New Zealand’s Lucas Alexandre 3–1, winning 11–8, 6–11, 11–4 and 12–10 to retain the title he had won previously. His performance throughout the tournament was equally impressive, winning 62 of the 68 individual games he played and losing just six. India’s Lakshay Kumar finished third, while France’s Hachim Tifassi Idrissi placed fourth.

The victory marked Ssebatindira’s second consecutive global title, giving him another reason to believe in his ability as he prepares for the Youth Olympic Games.

“It was a tough competition, but I’m happy I won,” he said after the World Hopes Week and Challenge.

His route to the title involved facing players from different parts of the world, including Alexandre, competitors from Chile and India, and a British opponent. That exposure to international competition has given him another opportunity to test himself against a variety of playing styles.

Now, the focus shifts to Senegal, where he will not only compete for personal success but also carry the Ugandan flag as captain of Team Uganda.

Representing Uganda at the Youth Olympic Games is a moment the young table tennis player is approaching with excitement and determination.

“I feel very happy to represent Uganda in the Youth Olympics,” he said before travelling to Senegal.

He understands that the competition will not be easy, but his approach remains straightforward: give his best and make his country proud.

“It’s a tough competition, but I do my best,” he added.

Ssebatindira’s responsibilities extend beyond his own matches. As captain of Team Uganda, he is also entrusted with a leadership role among his fellow athletes.

Asked about that responsibility, he said he would do his duty as captain of the team.

It is a new dimension to his Youth Olympic experience, placing him in a position where representing Uganda means more than stepping up to the table and competing. He must also embrace the responsibility that comes with leading his teammates at a major international event.

For a young athlete who has already tasted success at global level, the opportunity presents another stage on which to grow.

Despite his recent triumph in England, Ssebatindira is under no illusion that success at the Youth Olympic Games will come easily.

The competition will bring him up against different opponents, each with their own ambitions, and he already has an idea of the player he considers a particular threat.

Asked which opponent he feared most, he singled out Emmanuel from Colombia. The Senegalese competitors, on the other hand, were the opponents he said he was not scared of.

And he has no elaborate promises about what he intends to achieve.

“What should we expect from you?” he was asked. “I will do my best to make Uganda proud,” he responded.

It is a simple message, but one that captures his ambition as he prepares to compete on one of the biggest stages of his young career.

Settling into life in Senegal

As preparations continued in Dakar, Ssebatindira offered a positive update on his experience in the Youth Olympic environment. He was among the first contingent to arrive.

He said the weather was not too difficult for him to handle because he was accustomed to similar conditions in France.

“The weather is not too bad for me because I’m used to being in this weather in France,” he said.

He was equally comfortable with life in the athletes’ village, describing the experience as good and expressing satisfaction with the food.

Training had also gone well. Ssebatindira felt the sessions in the gym were productive and believed they would help improve his speed and overall performance.

“I think my speed will increase,” he said, adding that he expected improvement across the board.

For Ssebatindira, the mission is clear: compete with determination, embrace the challenge and give everything he has.
