Wicknell Chivayo has gifted musician Selmor Mtukudzi a brand-new 2026 Toyota Fortuner 2.4 GD-6 and US$20,000 for fuel, and extended US$20,000 to her stepmother, Daisy Mtukudzi, for personal upkeep.
Chivayo announced the gifts in a social media post on Thursday, 4 September 2026, two weeks after Selmor posted a video on 20 August defending Chivayo from criticism on social media.
Chivayo said Selmor’s video message was well received and apologised for responding late.
He praised her for carrying forward the legacy of her late father, legendary musician Oliver Mtukudzi.
“I want to take this opportunity to thank you for carrying forward the incredible legacy of your late father, the legendary Oliver Mtukudzi. Continue working hard, staying focused and inspiring fans around the world,” Chivayo wrote.
“What I particularly admire is your determination to build your own identity while proudly carrying such a powerful family name. Following in the footsteps of a musical giant is never easy, but you have continued to demonstrate your own talent, confidence and passion.”
Chivayo, who has in recent years gifted cars and cash to musicians, footballers and church figures, said life was too short to hold grudges.
“Life is too short to hate one another and hold generational grudges, so please call and ask Mama Daisy to accompany you to see Madzibaba Chipaga together next week on Monday and collect your 2026 brand-new Toyota Fortuner 2.4 GD-6 that has now been fully paid for and is ready for collection, together with US$20,000 cash for fuel. Mama Daisy will also get her 20 thousand USD for her personal upkeep.”
He told Selmor to bring Daisy Mtukudzi, Oliver’s widow and Selmor’s stepmother, when she comes to collect the car.
In her video posted on 20 August, Selmor said she had been insulted after her previous post about Chivayo, and had spent time deleting comments.
“Hi guys, my name is Selmor Mtukudzi. After my post yesterday, some of you insulted me, some insulted Sir Wicknell. I was busy deleting some of the comments and I won’t stop doing that,” she said.
Selmor said no musician in Zimbabwe would say what Chivayo is doing is bad because he is giving life-changing opportunities.
“The honest truth is that no musician in Zimbabwe will come out and say what Sir Wicknell is doing is bad, because for sure he is giving us life-changing opportunities.”
She said that while people may think musicians are doing well, the reality is often different.
“Sometimes things are not going well. And someone comes and shares his wealth with us, he does not owe us anything, but out of the goodness of his heart, he’s willing to give somebody a life-changing gift.”
Selmor said she was excited to hear Chivayo say publicly that he had no problem with her.
“The honest truth is that I was so, so excited to realise and to know, to hear it from your own mouth saying that you have no problem with me. And the truth is that even I don’t have a problem with you.”
She linked Chivayo’s support to her own difficult early years, recalling her 2013 hit “Nguva Yangu”.
“That song came out in 2013; we didn’t have a car, my husband Tendai and I. We were travelling by kombi while living in Chitungwiza. We were seen standing at the kombi rank; someone took a picture from afar and posted it on Facebook saying, ‘Look, the children of a legend have nothing; they are travelling by kombi.’ It was embarrassing; even when you get into the kombi, your own song is playing on the radio, and people turn to look at you.”
She added: “What you’re doing, you are removing shame for us as musicians, and we really appreciate it. Please continue; may God bless you. May He increase you even more.”
Selmor also asked to be considered for future events and said she would love to work with Chivayo, and warned critics that she would continue to delete and block insults.
The gifts are seen as an attempt to reconcile Selmor and Daisy, whose relationship has been strained since Oliver Mtukudzi died in 2019, with public disputes over the family’s legacy and estate.
