A Zambian fisherman (44) was attacked and killed by a hippo at Lake Lyambezi in the Zambezi region on Tuesday.
The deceased was identified as Figo Walubita and his next of kin have been informed of his death.
Zambezi regional police commander commissioner Julia Sakuwa-Neo confirmed the incident to The Namibian on Wednesday.
Sakuwa-Neo said the deceased was fishing with his friend around 09h00 near the Kamatanda Cattle Post when they encountered two aggressive hippos in the lake.
“These two hippos went on to attack the canoe, which they were in, and it capsized. The deceased and his friend fell into the water, and one of the hippos charged towards the deceased and attacked him to death. His friend managed to escape and went to inform others at the cattle post,” she said.
She added that the police were informed and the search for his body began using the community boat.
“We retrieved the body of the deceased. The hippo was identified, and the Ministry of Environment, Forestry, and Tourism has been informed,” she said.
